why not pick up a used pair of dyna A25s going for a song?
Follow Ups:
I have at least two pairs of A25's and have owned many more over the years.
Easy to drive, easy on the ears, and easy on the wallet; they pair well with almost any vintage gear, and acquit themselves well with just about anything, perhaps apart from very low powered amps. Hook them up to a PP amp of around 15 to 35 watts and you and they will both be in heaven.
Like most Dyna gear, you can sell it for nearly as much, if not more, as you paid for it, you almost can't get hurt, and even if you don't post a gain, you can easily pick up a pair for under about $150.
That's how this whole thing started. I sold my A-25s when I moved into my tiny 8x10 bedroom in my apartment, where I'll be living for the foreseeable future (virtually no storage space). Small quarters & close neighbors had the A-25s physical presence & sound (especially the bass) overly dominating the environment. Using those circumstances as an impetus for checking out the modern speaker realm, after much research & trial I ended up with the Kef Q100s, with which, as I've said, I'm quite happy with for the most part. As I'm in no particular rush, I guess my best bet would be to hold out & wait for a pair of preferred Dynaco A-10s pop up for sale. I'll just hook them up as my "rock/blues" speakers on the B speaker channel of my amp.
Anybody else of a relatively advanced age (I'm 65) having trouble getting the music they loved back then/when sounding as it did/does on modern speakers? Or have I just not come across any yet in my limited travels?
As stated in my opening thread remarks, my listening habits as of late dwell for the most part in the Classical range, but when I'm hankerin' for a bite of the dog that originally bit me, the nostalgic/familial sound is just as important as the content.

...a good pair of Grado, Sennheiser, or AKG cans would be in order.
