It may be thin brass with a coating over it. That coating was/is probably close to gone. I imagine much further and I'd start seeing undesirable results. I use other cleaning solutions and methods too. The Turtle Wax was purchased to do work on some real rough pieces that can have some of their original appearance brought back. You do want to be careful. I would not do this to a piece I cared about. I'd be much more careful if it was.

...with a thin lacquer overcoat. I restored one and found that the discoloration was under the lacquer. Any polish capable of removing the discoloration also removed the lacquer. I ended up removing the lacquer completely, polishing the brass and overcoating with tinted lacquer. Looks as new if not better.
I think that's what I'm seeing on the 80-AZ. But it has larger fields of red that I don't want to alter. I can't work on it further because it's sold. I'm leaving it alone now. Let the next person clean it if they want.
