That was my first test of using Turtle Wax "Renew Rx" Rubbing Compound - Heavy Duty Cleaner. I tried a discreet area along the edge first and then said, aw effit. I'm going for the whole thing. I wasn't concerned about the outcome as the piece is nothing special to me...so I took the liberty of hitting it hard where it needed it most. Now I know how hard I can rub. I'm ready to do the faceplate of a Fisher 80-AZ.
This face took me about 20 minutes. I'll spend another 10-15 on it once the knobs are done soaking.

Follow Ups:
Wouldn't want to go through a plating but 4-0 steel wool dipped in mineral spirits is the conservators method for solid.
White rags wet with VM&P Naptha for more delicate work. Really, really delicate, Naptha soaked rag on the end of a dowel just lightly twirled on a square inch, discard rag and repeat with a fresh one on another square inch until several hours later, done.
It may be thin brass with a coating over it. That coating was/is probably close to gone. I imagine much further and I'd start seeing undesirable results. I use other cleaning solutions and methods too. The Turtle Wax was purchased to do work on some real rough pieces that can have some of their original appearance brought back. You do want to be careful. I would not do this to a piece I cared about. I'd be much more careful if it was.

...with a thin lacquer overcoat. I restored one and found that the discoloration was under the lacquer. Any polish capable of removing the discoloration also removed the lacquer. I ended up removing the lacquer completely, polishing the brass and overcoating with tinted lacquer. Looks as new if not better.
I think that's what I'm seeing on the 80-AZ. But it has larger fields of red that I don't want to alter. I can't work on it further because it's sold. I'm leaving it alone now. Let the next person clean it if they want.
