In Reply to: RE: I like the L-710 better than the L-780, FWIW posted by mhardy6647 on January 01, 2016 at 12:17:45
I've thought about the l710, but am a bit fearful that the two bass drivers will overload the sound. For me, nothing can be worse than boomy bass.
Do my fears have any basis in fact at all?
Follow Ups:
I have L810, 910 and L1290's. The size of the woofers doesn't necessarily make any speakers boomy, it's the box alignment based on an individual woofer's parameters. In the 4 cases above, the 910's have the largest woofers but the tightest, and lowest, bass in my room. The L810's the least damped sounding. I use them all with tube amps. I think the bass can get a bit dry and overdamped sounding with SS. The L810's might benefit from a SS amp but for me that would not be my choice for the mid/treble range.
Good luck with the hunt.

That said... why do you think that?
The idea behind using a couple of small(er) woofers vs. a larger one has some sound (heh!) physics behind it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the two 7" woofers of the L-710 having boomy bass. The L-710 tends to be on the neutral side, and is less bass heavy than the L-810 which has two 8.5-9" woofers. In my experience. If you can get a pair with the original ADS stands that's a plus, because the ADS stands tend to be a bit higher off the floor, Thus leading to less bass reinforcement. Also don't place them in the corners of the room for the same reason.
If you like the L-570 then keep your eyes open for a pair of L-1's. They are sort of a mash up between the L-520, and the L570. In fact I no longer have any L520's or 570's or L-420's but I'm keeping the L-1's.
(I also have L-710's, L-810's, L-200's, L-300's, 400's 500's and a pair of L7e)
good luck

The bass with two bass drivers will not overload the sound. It actually brings more balance because the woofers are smaller and faster.

I have a friend who says that fast bass drivers don't really matter. Bass is slow compared to higher frequencies. My gut says there is a lot of truth in that. I feel that it isn't acceleration that makes bass sound 'fast' but deceleration. Bass alignments with minimal overhang sound'fast' but unfortunately don't sell so most commercial alignments are far from optimal.

all the best,

Two small woofers can have a wider frequency response than the equivalent piston area as one driver due to the better dispersion and lower moving mass (per driver) of the smaller drivers (all else being equal).

710's.... have a lot of bass.
Too much for you? Hard to say.
