199.223.21.100
Our McIntosh 240 amplifier was purchased on December 8, 1965 from E-Z Teletronics in Chicago. We use it just about every day - and with it, we've explored a great deal of music. No, we are not the original owners, but we've enjoyed this amplifier since 1996, and it continues to enrich our lives. I may be able to post the original paperwork.

Is 40/ch enough power to drive the Maggie's? I'd always heard how power hungry planer speakers can be.
Also, on 12/8/65, Aylene K. turned 9 years old.
I use a Hsu sub and the combination has plenty of power.
I was driving 1.7 Maggies with a Mike Samra re-built Mc240 and they sounded very nice.I am now driving the Maggies with a Mc275 that Mike also re-built and it opened the sound stage up and improved the focus and detail even at normal or moderate volume levels.

Sounds wonderful. I heard a pair of Maggies years ago, and what impressed me the most was their huge sound stage and full mid-range. What I didn't like was the roll off in the bass and treble. I sold a pair of Quad 57s a little over a year after purchase for that very reason. Well, to each his /her own, right?
I'm using a pr. of M & K subs with the Maggies to add weight to the low end.
It's the kind of system I'd like to hear because it differs so much from my a/d/s 1230s. I've owned them since 1983 and have never had a need to replace them.
Svisner,
the MC240 is a nice amp.
If you want to do an interesting experiment, order a re-issue set of tung sol 6550s and insert them inplace of the 6L6GC output tubes on the 240.
The power transformer on the 240 is beefy enough it does not even notice the added heater current draw.
The amp opens up and sounds like a more powerful amp.
happy listening.
Happy Anniversary! Can't say that about too many products in audio or otherwise.
After 50 years, the McIntosh still sounds magnificent, driving a pair of Maggies, with a Rogue Perseus front end. My wife just recovered the Maggies (Hanukkah present) and today is the 50th anniversary of the amplifier's original purchase (see photo).
We use our system almost daily, and I think we use it well. Our exploration and enjoyment of music is made all the more pleasant by a system that combines vintage equipment with contemporary technology. As to how this amplifier (and the system it serves) has enriched our lives, see the "My Birthday" post at link.
$288 was a lot of money in 1965 (no, I am not the original owner); some wouldn't spend that now on a piece of audio gear, but think of the duration and return on that original investment.
What greater return than the continued pleasure of music day in and day out, that indeed is priceless, enjoy!
I remember when those could be had cheap, but I was not aware of how good they were! Interesting link to you birthday. On my birthday this year, I didn't have time to listen to Dvorak's 8th, let alone conduct it! I think I will listen to Mahler on my next birthday. Then again, why wait? How about this weekend!
P.S. Love Dorati on Mercury in both mono and stereo!
Dave
Any particular Mahler in mind? I grew up with the Bernstein/NYP recording of the 2nd. Got me hooked.
Bernstein was all the rage when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's, at least when I became aware of him, and IMO for good reason. His Mahler interpretations are some of his best work. You won't go wrong with Bernstein.
But I am a fickle listener and there are others to consider. Lately I have been enjoying Bruno Walter. However, I am always drawn to Fritz Reiner's 4th on the beautiful sounding RCA Living Stereo. He is one of my favorite conductors.
Dave
George Cates & Lawrence Welk! I also liked Arthur Fiedler ,a lot as well!
I still enjoying listening to them & have over a 100 LP's of the Welk Band!Along with all those bubbles I am able to keep them records as well as my listening room nice & sparkling Clean too!
I am a big Arthur Fiedler fan and have many of his records. There are times that I just want to be entertained.
Dave
That's why I like the 3 Conductors I chose! Because there styles of arranging music is very entertaining to me!Also almost an Welk LP on Coral,Brunswick or Dot are recorded extremely well too!
Hi Brian,
I have to admit that I completely dismissed Lawrence Welk without giving him a try. I see his recordings every time I go to a thrift store. If I can find a clean copy, I will give him a try.
Dave
I have a number of recordings, including a couple of chamber versions. However, the version at the link is the one that got me hooked on the 4th. Perhaps not well known, but a nice performance nonetheless.
I never heard of it. Was it released in the USA?
Dave
I purchased it in the US though I don't recall where. Budget disk. Nice performance with unusual choice for soprano solo.
The Warranty.
