Just acquired a Heathkit SP2 (sounds great) and have a question regarding phono playback. Should I use the input marked "LP" or the one marked "RIAA?"
Follow Ups:
Based on my recent testing & "tune up" of a recently acquired Heathkit WA-P2 preamp you will likely need to replace all the capacitors and resistors in the equalization circuit for the Mag Phono settings to achieve the correct sound. (The values are critical and the original components will either have drifted in value or were poor tolerance to begin with.) I also found the functioning of the tone controls to be a little haywire until associated caps were replaced.

I did ALL the caps first and had lackluster results until I went back and replaced the resistors, as well. It sounds very nice now, much cleaner but still some of that vintage softness, which I guess must be inherent in the circuit - that's with no mods to the circuit, per se, just replacement of old parts with new tightly spec'ed parts (even, gasp, metal films in the phono section).
Those old carbon composite resistors can drift from age an heat. When I was doing this type of work, we always replaced then with metal film. Nowadays I have read that it is popular to replace with carbon film, except the gridstoppers, which should be an in spec carbon composite. At least that is what I have read, and plan to do with my current tube gear. However, I have never tried it this way, and there are those who still prefer in spec carbon composite.
