I hear ya.
Maybe Mike can chime in about what he did to the S-5000 phono section. All I know is its really, really nice. It bested my Jolida JD-9 as well as my EAR 834. I'm not saying it's the best, but it's a pretty damn nice phono.
My S-5000 sounded really good immediately after I got it back from Mike, however, after I ran it in for a couple hundred hours the massive Russian Teflon coupling caps settled in and the sound quality took a very noticeable leap ahead.

I am STILL amazed at that little stereo every time I re-hook it into the rotation. Just amazing!!!
I rotate it every other month with a VTA ST-70 kit from Bob Latino amp and a Conrad Johnson Classic 2SE tube preamp. So the "other" setup the Sherwood is up against truly classified as a "new" tube setup. The VTA ST-70 is also one AMAZING sounding amp. A fantastic but yet different setup.
I truly am at a point where there is no improving. Only trying different types of sound signatures. And that's what tube rolling if good at.
The tube line up I run in the line stage is:
V3 Gold Lion B759 (12AX7 long coil??) NICE tube
V4 TungSol 12AX7
V5 RCA Black plate vintage 12AX7
I've yet to actually use the phono section. but I'm sure it's sweet.
I'm running both Sylvanias 12AX7's and Sovtek 12AX7-LPS in the phono V1 and V2.
☆☆☆☆☆☆I NO LONGER USE ONE 12AU7 AND ONE 12AX7 IN THE PHONO ☆☆☆☆☆☆
Let's just say that I shouldn't drink and tube roll - not my smartest move eh' Mikey?
Note: Most Telefunkens have had their lettering worn off and it's easy to confuse them when sober, let alone "tuned up". Who would have thought that 45 volts instead of the normal 140+ would lower the output volume?
For V3, V4, V5 (linestage) I'm using smooth plate Telefunkens for that upper midrange good stuff I have yet to find with the other tubes I have tried.
Recently Mike and I have been discussing plans for my "big boy" stereo. I have a nice Audio Research SP3-A1 that I'm going to have Mike do his thing with to include a remote control volume. I am currently looking for a pair of amps to pair with the SP3. I'm leaning toward either McIntosh MC-60's, Heathkit W6's, or ???????? Whatever it is, it must have a separate power supply, so monos make the most sense. I also want a all film power supply and monos typically have the space required.

What to try something REALLY good and different. Check this out. I built a VTA ST-70 and it Rocks!!!!
I think we are on the same page in audio. So do give it a consideration.
Same audio page - pretty much.
I will give tubes4hifi a good look.
Thanks.
