Well, this idiot can tell you the answer!
Despite repeated warnings to myself to be careful and "stay away from the dial string", "stay away from the dial string", "stay away from the dial string", one tiny tiny instant of stupidity while unsoldering a volume control and puff.
Of course it was only my crummy old McIntosh MX-110, nothing I care about (NOT).
Yes, it's recoverable and I managed to tape the string in place to preserve the stringing pattern but man why oh why didn't I just clip out the old control instead of trying to preserve that last 1/4" of the wires on the control?
I'm sure none of you have stories like this! :)

TOO damned easy. I've done it myself, too.
Gary,
In my "illustrious" career I've burned through darn near everything! So thanks for proving the old saying that "misery loves company"!
It's amazing what I've caught myself doing at times - just like that last 1/4" of wire - it just becomes an obsession and you find yourself doing wacky things for no good reason. I know EXACTLY what you mean.
Good luck on the rest of your project.
Nope, no stories like that, except soldering my finger to a board while replacing caps inside a pair of Dynaco A25 speakers.
Sorry to hear of your mishap, but it sounds recoverable.
That drops of hot solder DOOOO burn through the cone of a A-25 woofer.
Ever try soldering with the unit one. Ohhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhh. Now THAT'S stupid.
I always UNPLUG what ever I'm working on before I work on it. For some reason I just forgot to unplug it. Or at least turn it off.
