My Thorens TD224 is fitted with aThorens BTD12S tonearm. I understood it requires a cartridge with high compliance.
The TD224 feeds a Marantz 7 preamp with stock Telefunken 12ax7 in the phono section. I understood that Marantz 7's prefer MM phono cartridge.
Do you have any recommendations for phono cartridge for this setup? I am listening to 50's, 60's jazz combos.
Shure VN5xMR or M97xE? Audio-Technica AT150MLX or others?
Thank you for your valuable advices !

Cartridge choice is determined primarily by arm cartridge compliance.
Your 7 has tape head inputs which is associated with tt gain and when turned up can acccomodate many medium and some low output mc's.
Check out the Grado line!
Grado carts. sound good, BUT there is their vulnerability to hum pickup. Also, Grados have a reputation for working best in arms that are somewhat massive.

Where did you get that information from? Grado works better in a low to medium mass arm not a massive one. I've used different Grados for over thirty years and never had a hum problem with any table that I've used with them.
Count your blessings! A Grado cart. on a TT with an unshielded AC motor is unpleasant. :> ( Been there done that.
The so called Grado dance is another possible problem area.
Don't get me wrong. I like the Grado sound. However, as is so often the case, "leg work" has to be done or a poor result is obtained.

I agree with you! Much leg work should be done before any mistakes are made!
Because double-posting is both annoying, and against Asylum rules. But in this case...I think you'll get a lot more response if you pose this question in the Vinyl Asylum, where all things turntable, tonearm, cartridge, phono stage, etc. are regularly discussed.
You might contact a moderator and ask them to move your post, or simply re-post. The first question you're probably going to get is, "What's your budget?", so I'd come up with a ballpark figure in advance and include that in your re-post. It saves the "guessing game" for those trying to be helpful to you.
I can't recommend a cartridge, since its been many years since I've used anything but low output moving coils. I will suggest that you also consider moving iron, specifically one from Soundsmith (link below). Not that I've heard one of those either, but I've read enough praise about them that they'd be on my list if I were looking for a high output / high compliance cartridge.
Good luck.

My understanding is the the Soundsmith MI cartridges are B&O cartridges the he now manufactures. B&O cartridges sounded very good to my ears!

An update.
I went to the Stereophile site to read about Art Dudley reviewing a phono stage. Instead, I found he'd written an article on Soundsmith. I thought you might find it interesting. It seems to answer our questions on the B&O history. (link below)

I have seen that article before. It is part of what I was basing my statements on, bur I was too lazy to track it down!

But have no idea if they still are. I haven't heard a B&O cartridge since probably 1977. I'd love to hear a Soundsmith cartridge someday. Too bad that they don't offer 30 day free trials, like some speaker and wire manufacturers do.And I'm saying that tongue in cheek. I know how difficult that would be, especially with something as fragile as a cartridge. Still, buying a $1000 cartridge based on nothing but a review or two really makes me uncomfortable. Nothing against Sounsdmith, it's that way everywhere. I had to buy my Denon 103R, Dynavector DV-20 XL, Audio-Technica oc9 mk2, and Zu 103R exactly that way. The OC-9 was the only one I sold.
I always enjoy your posts, by the way!
Edited for spelling.

Even the Carmen and Othello are not cheap, with the Othello coming in at just under $500.

IIRC, some Ortofon models were pretty low compliance. Ortofon's OM 5E seems to trigger a shape memory. It's spec'd compliance, dynamic, lateral 20 µm/mN and it costs under $100. For a price, stylus upgrades, including line trace, are available.
