In Reply to: RE: 1 Watt Resistors are helpful at certain areas... posted by Interstage Tranny on September 14, 2015 at 15:41:10
Hi Airtime and Interstage, Air, you saved my ass, I was going to order metal oxide resistors without knowing what you told me about the sound...many thanks. Interstage mentioned that too in an e-mail, dittos. From what you said Inter,I will be getting the 1 watt resistors, I like the safety factor. Now I have another question, metal film or carbon film resistors, I want the best within sane prices if you know what I mean. I am going to write down every persons name that has helped me on this rebuild and if I can make it look real good enough that it should be in a picture, all names will be on the credits at the end of the show. Airtime and Interstage you'll be in the front like director and producer. Just to let you know I tried calling Frank VanAlstine but no one was in except Mary, the orderer for 10 years.I told her what my questions were and she recommended 1/2 watt Vishay resistors. Anyway, I learned a ton tonight and am looking forward to ordering the right resistors, where is also a question. Thanks you guys...Mark.
Follow Ups:
Metal film resistors are very clean and transparent sounding. An excellent choice for signal path resistors.
Carbon film resistors are also wonderful for audio path use. They have a warmer sound smooth sound. Not as clean and transparent as metal film. But great in their own way.
It's hard to give an honest opinion about a part, a stereo, etc... without sounding like one is better than the other. Both are excellent audio use choices and you can't go wrong with either.
Actually sometimes you do want one over the other. I always felt tubes respond better to carbon film. But that is my own opinion.
ALso don't underestimate Radio Shacks 1/2 watt carbon film resistors. I don't know where they get those things from but they sound GREAT!!! As do their 1/4 watt metal film pack - is also EXCELLENT.
Keep us posted

Hi Airtime, late last night after reading some more on resistors I guess I had metal oxidide mixed up with metal film I took the advise you and Interstage said. I went ahead and put the order in for Holco metal films 1 watt from Mike Percy.Yeah, more money but so much easier to order than from Mouser. I did need a 10k resistor for my Stereo 70 and found a Radio Shack still open and found a 10k 1/2 watt packet for under 2 bucks. My car blew a hose and I was stuck in the parking lot but I had the key to fixing my amp so the whole world was cool! Even though it's mostly phones they sell, the Shacks still have a mechanics style tool box full of resistors and dodads. Thanks again Charles...Mark.
