AudioSoul, I saw a video someone sent on the making of the McIntosh 275 tube amp. Part of the process of transformer construction showed dipping the interior transformer, not the housing or bell, into a black, tar looking goop in the construction of the tranny. Maybe a shorted or over heated transformer could be the culprit. You can laugh but I saw it on the video....Mark Korda.

There are six tubes in this preamp, the goop is only on the tubes and sockets and components around them. This material is very sticky. I used some goo gone on one of the tubes and it cleaned up nicely. But, the sockets and circuit board is another story. It would take hours to clean this mess up. The rest of the preamp is in great condition. What to do, what to do?
Sounds like AQ tubr dampeners
Try w tip with acetone
Did you get in touch with the seller? Return it while you still can, there is no tellin' what else is wrong with it! Get yourself another one. If I received something in that condition it would bother the shit out of me! It's your call !
A box of q-tips(r) and some 99% Isoporopanol and an afternoon, and you can remove all of it-
Good ventilation - you do not need to inhale the fumes...
you will have the unit to the way it was before the tube dampers were installed-
One VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Polystyrene capacitors can be very adversely affected by Solvents - the stronger the solvent- the worse the affect (It dissolves the Polystyrene)
(Isopropanol- IPA- Isopropal alcohol - rubbing alcohol)
Happy Listening
