I have never owned any CJ equipment before so I thought I would take a stab at it. This is a full function preamp. I have read a couple of user reviews and it looks promising. Anyone own one that can comment. I am going to us it with a Forte Model 3 amp......
Follow Ups:
I had a PV-8, listened to it for about 6 months before I did a listening comparsion with a Dynaco PAS that had a reasonable amount of upgrades. The Dynaco sounded much better. I tried a lot of upragdes to the PV-8, and all I could achieve was that it approached the sound of the Dynaco. I finally gave up and sold it. Before someone asks if it is just that I like the sound of the Dynaco or if it was system synergy, I have tried and used other preamps around the price point of the PV-8, they all sounded better than the PV-8 and most sound better than the Dynaco.
Nice preamp. My only concern would be an audible noise floor. Lots of gain with that linestage. The Forte has a 47K input impedance but I don't know its sensitivity or gain.

At one time, I had the the PV8, 12 and the PV5. Both the 8 and 12 as others noted were more neutral sounding. Of the three models, the PV5 was the only one I regretted selling. some say it was more colored sounding than the others, but it also had a larger power supply. Dynamics were great with it.
If you are looking in that price range, I would certainly consider the Audible Illusions Modulus 3a. the 3a blows all three of the CJ pres into the weeds. Owned two of the 3a's for some time, still have one I use occasionally.

"Audible Illusions Modulus 3a. the 3a blows all three of the CJ pres into the weeds."
Really? Because it's more neutral? Wider freq response?
I found the Modulus to actually be neutral - and completely un-tuby. Transistor amp sound. Not in a bad way, in a good way, but definately not tube sound.
If I were going to the trouble of getting a tube pre - or a tube amp - I'd want them for "euphonic", totally tube sound. Otherwise, may's well just get transistors.

Yes I don't need a linestage and I sold plenty AI used ones as a dealer that also sold new/used CJ. Synergy is the most important thing along with good tubes in my experience. Again a high out / low Z pre (even worse with a cathode follower) is a recipe for a big noise floor with a modern hi Z sensitive amp. I was only commenting on the noise floor issue.

I had one from when it first came out in 1989 (I believe) up to 2006...It was reliable, and I bought it because my dealer (unclestu) had the pv-5 in his showroom as their reference preamp back then a few months earlier, and I wanted their newest mid priced wonder..
It had more of a neutral sound, not euphonic like the pv-5, and if I were to choose again, I'd get the pv-5 and have it modded..
unclestu had installed some bybee purifiers in the pv-8 when the purifiers came out...still, very reliable, hardly got hot, used to put the VPI brick on the right rear corner near its transformer, and got better imaging.
