Hi Everyone,
I am looking for information on options to rehab some old power and output transformers.
I am building a pair of amps using a pair of Acrosound TO335 outputs (TO-330s with an additional pair of 150 ohm taps) as well as a pair of UTC CG429 power transformers and UTC CG 102 chokes
I would like to wire wheel or sandblast the cases and have them powder coated. Does anyone have knowledge if this is possible or would the powder coating process damage the transformers?
Thanks,
-Ed

If you can remove end bells/covers then sandblast and coat/electroplate as desired. In no case do you want to do anything aggressive to the lams. Just spray paint over the rust on them (IMHO).
Be careful cleaning the laminations. They are isolated from each other with varnish (or some type of insulating film). If you wire brush them, you may short them, which will ruin the transformers. Shorted laminations increase the eddy currents.
It it were me, I wouldn't risk a 200 deg. bake on the xfrmr. If you
(glass bead) blast them and use a name brand spray paint, they will
look as good as the powder.
Powder coats I'm familiar with require a hi temp bake in vicinity of 300F or greater. This temp will damage internal insulating materials and most likely render the transformer useless. An air dry, solvent based paint is probably your best bet (I've had poor results with currently avail air dry water based paints -YMMV). If needed, most vintage transformers can tolerate a bake of maybe 120-140F but there are still damage risks.
