I was at a seminar on restoring wood furniture in March
There was a discussion about restoring a finish on speakers. I have some Celestion County's from the 70's, sound great look so so. The instructor gave us a concoction of 4 parts mineral spirits an 1 part double boiled linseed oil and a cloth to rub it into the wood. Let sit for 15 minutes then polish with a lint free cloth.
Now they not only sound great they look great.

It seems to me that this will work great in restoring an old oil finish. I would be concerned about applying it over a old varnish finish leading to a gummy mess. What's your experience and thoughts? If this is useful with a wide range of finishes it would be useful.

This type of finish is only good for non-film coated veneers.
Many of the older cabinets were wiped with a stained tung-oil, or wiping varnish type finish. It did put a "thin" level of coating. But mainly it was a sealed stained type of finish. It was meant to be redone every few years. Like old furniture.
If the coat is shinny then you have a varnish type finish. Don't redo it. If it's matte finish then it should be redone every few years.
