I purchased this pre as a backup to my tube pre. Until I get my tube pre back that is. It's the darndest thing this little minimalist pre from 1985 sounds so good it's a wonder why people are buying new amps and pres. It is still SS so it doesn't have the front to back depth or quite the holographic image around the instruments as a good tube pre but it sounds very, very good. Anyone know of any other good vintage preamp bargains?
Follow Ups:
Sanyo Plus Series C55 preamp. Yeah, Sanyo. Had one back in the day and 20 years later bought another to back up my Aesthetix Calypso when (and if) needed.
The Plus Series was good gear.

I have yet to hear a vintage Yamaha preamp that did not sound good, but I am particularly partial to C-2x, which I own. Other good ones IMO are:
David Hafler Model 110
Preamp section of a NAD 3020
Sony TA-2000F
Accphase -anything!
Adcom GFP-565
Niko Beta-20

If you're looking for SS. And they generally don't sell for much either. A good condition Apt Holman pre is also pretty sweet and some of the old GAS pres are nice. I like my Thoebe, but I think the Thaedra is the one to have, although I think it's pricier.
