Audio setup consists of EV cabs with SP15 woofers, JBL 2435 tweets, Oppo BDP-105 and VM 1448 rebuilt by Don Sachs. I didnt think this amp could possibly sound more than 10% better but Don made it sound at least 50% better!

I have a pair of blown SP15s Ive always wondered about... Always thought of how they would do for a nice 2 or 3 way system kinda like what youve done.
High sens and clearly a driver meant for tubes. No way one would want a 100 watt SS amp opening up on em. Id need to recone mine and wonder how they would hold up to the specs of their originals.
How is the bass response in your opinion? What did you do for a crossover?
That VOM amp is IMO one of the greatest looking vintage tube amps one could ask for. Just scream 50s-early 60s retro to the max. Never got a chance to hear one in person but it clearly has a following. On this notion Im going to send you an email...
If you have pics of Don's work on the underside Im sure I and folks here would love to see the job done.
Still looking for a good tube guy within reasonable driving distance of me for work like that. Have a guy now but he is rather slow...
Wonderful inspiring setup!
Bass response is excellent. It is one of the main reasons I chose this amp. That and the low power since the speakers are so efficient. I made a 2 way simple crossover that crosses at 2000 hz. I used a Russian pio cap and a 10 dollar inductor. The SP 15s are excellent and but you must have a 7.5 cubic foot cabinet to get the most out of them.
Very cool.
Another designer I used more or less believes in a simple crossover design similar to what you did for such 2 way systems.
Makes sense to me. Im guessing it presents a easy load for a tube amp.
Assuming one never throws crazy amounts of power at such a speaker a simple 1st order setup is all one needs. Also mainly what was used in the days of tube.
I do and I dont wish I were near by to hear em. Id fall in love with the sound and be on track to build up another speaker system LOL
Again great work man. Im sure its very rewarding!
Well, I am in Central Florida if you want to hear them.
Looks about 80% vintage. I rebuilt the VM PP 6AQ5. It does not have a phono amp though. As for other inexpensive amps & receivers the over looked Bogen with the PP 6V6s (7408) are excellent plus have a phono stage.
Its in decent enough shape. The writing is more worn on the face than Id care to have been dealt. Oh well...
I recently came upon a good half dozen 6gh8 tubes. When I have it rebuilt Ill just have the 7199 sockets rewired for these.
Yeah for a 6v6 PP amp the outputs are a bit small than Id care for. But I watched the few youtube vids of this amp in action the bass seemed ok. All of which I think are pre rebuild status.
Yeah Im a bogen fan thanks to a couple of builders I used. Have some bogen amps that were rebuilt or transformers pulled and made into an amp. Great gear IMO.
Should be a wonderful little amp!
I rebuilt the receiver version of your amplifier. Frankly I preferred the Bogen to a rebuilt VM. The owner of both also preferred the Bogen sonics.
Very nice.
Any tips or advice for the rebuild? Im all ears!
As always if you care to share, I know I and others would love to see pics of the work done.
BTW youve made it abundantly clear your love for the 6060 :)
I have a rebuilt original 1120. Original outputs with its cap coupled design. Great warm sounding amp. Sony has quite the strong following from this era. Along with nearly every other LOL.
I think you, like Mike did for the sherwood 5000, have single handedly made the price of the 6060 rise a bit ;)
Thanks for any info.
I was on a quest for the best sounding SS receiver a few years ago. Far from a large group of vintage receivers, but the STR-6060FW was best of the lot. Honorable mention was a Sansui G-6000. A stock Fisher 400 did sound better vs the STR-6060FW except for bass definition. After mods the Fisher 400 went from ok to the stratosphere.
I have a penchant for Fisher iron myself.
Used the 400 iron for my Push/pull 45.
Used the 500C for my Triode 807.

If you ever get a chance, try Kyocera. They made a fantastic receiver. D

Look really good and the table is perfect too. Would be nice to hang tv on wall and trim the edge in mahogany to match table to minimize its appearance.
Its not a flat tv and its in front of a window so that wouldnt work so well but a good thought
Oh, I see the window now.
Is your TV hooked up to the audio system as well?

Yes, I run 2 channel from the Oppo to the VM via RCA cables and an HDMI cable from the Oppo to the TV. If I want to use the VM with the TV I just mute the TV and turn on the VM.
Interesting. I have a tube amp connected to a tv as well, but no dvd player. So how does sound output from the tv reach your amp? I don't quite get it.

I dont use the TV tuner. My source is the Oppo only. DVD or streaming from the Oppo. Too many commercials for me over the TV bands.
Wow, can my wife can see her nightime soaps on ABC via streaming? Do you do a wired connection from your Oppo player to your household modem or is it wireless? And finally, if you dont mind, do you need a minimum internet speed to do this? Can you watch 2 different show in the same household with 2 players...
feel free to defer on this if it is too much, I realize this is a vintage forum!

I dont know about soaps, probably. Wireless connection to the oppo. My internet is 10 Mbps (whatever that means). Yes, you can watch 2 different shows at the same time with 2 different players but with minimum speed interenet there may be some reloading here and there...
Those little amps are just KILLER! And a perfect speaker to match it as well.I fooled around for 20 some odd years and finally ended up with a little gem myself.
Nice clean setup. I have to look into Oppos. I'm using a marantz NA7004 audio streaming player and I am VERY happy with it. Just the entire planet Earth's music at my finger tips.

Thanks, the Oppo sounds great. It was a HUGE improvement over my old Yamaha Natural Sound player from the 90s. It has all the streaming stuff too.
I'm really enjoying this streaming stuff.
Besides FM is pretty much dead where I live. And how many times can you listen to the same CDs?
