Maybe this is a silly question but I'm wondering how much electricity my Pioneer Sx-1010 receiver draws when it isn't playing. I always turn it off when I'm not using it, even if going back to it in a couple of hours, because I figure just sitting there is wasting electricity. But I think it sounds better if its been on for a while.
ON the other hand, I don't have any idea how much electricity it really is using at rest.
Anyone able to enlighten me?

Pioneer does not specify the quiescent power. They just list a maximum.
Crown mentioned the idle power draw on some of their gear but the one I'm thinking of the D-150 has no lamps and draws 30 watts or less.
That SX has a bunch of lamps and more circuitry than the Crown amp so your quiescent current draw will be way more than 30 watts but I would say way less then 100 watts. The recommendation for a Kill-a-watt is good if no one has one of these devices hooked up to their SX-1010.
Not only can you find out for yourself, you can use it to find "vampire appliances", measure line voltage (and fluctuations thereof), determine power factor... all kinds of cool & handy stuff.
Inexpensive & very, very handy!
Available from tons of suppliers, of the on line or the B&M kind..
In all seriousness, this is a very useful thing to have.
all the best,
mrh
That would be useful for all sorts of other stuff too!
leave my receiver on if used throughout the day and turn it off before nighttime. Unless heat builds up. Then turn it off when through. I wouldn't worry about the electricity used..it is minimal. At the most 5 cents a day. Some better receivers and amps have a 2 stage switch to power on. Mine does. I would still put it in standby mode at night. Some receiver have a light that says they are in the standby mode and never go off. That probably uses 5 cents a year or less.
By rest do you mean with the unit turned on but not playing any music or do you mean with the unit turned off?

I really don't think it uses any juice when its off????
Unlike most new stereos that have a power supply that stays.
charles
and playing no music etc...
Sigh. Another Charlie Brown week coming my way.Better go spin an old lp and do those dishes I'm avoiding.
