Yes folks, the unit on the bottom right is a Marantz 7.
When I saw this on CL it was the top post, so it could not possibly have been there for very long. There was no phone number, so I emailed immediately.
I got an email a few hours later saying it was sold.
I asked him if he knew what the silver unit was and he said "...yes, a Marantz 7, but not the good one."
????????
Since when is there a bad Marantz 7 ?
So, do you think this was a BS teaser ad, or did he think it was a 7T, or did this guy really sell a 7 (or 7C) for fifty bucks ?
I've lost sleep over this one.

Follow Ups:
The one in the craiglist ad where the flipper (203-701-6101) is smoking crack and asking for $5k is the same one in the original ad for $50. Check the pattern of grime on the upper right corner of the faceplate. Lazy sack of shit couldn't even be bothered to clean the faceplate before multiplying price x100.
I knew my father was going to be setting up shop at the sports show. Got a call from him this morning saying there was a guy with some records.
My son already wanted to go. He really enjoys doing anything out doors. Had a wonderful fishing trip with him and my pops a year ago. He won 2 first place prizes in a large kid competition.
Well I got there and had my son hang with grandpa while dad poured through the records. Was surprised what I found. All these in wonderful shape. I really freaked when I found the DSM mercury set. Alas not a high dollar find compared to other DSM records. Vocal jazz isnt as sought after. But musically its superb. The others are really great too. For $10 Im stoked!
Was great to combine fishing with cool music. Im not near as big a sportsman. Always been more a nerd. But love being outside doing such things more so as an adult. Especially with my son.
Had a great talk with the fellow who sold me the LPs. He got em after buying an estate. Nice guy. Had some great ZZ Top stories. Also my son had a wonderful time. Gets a huge kick outta being at such events. Also grandpa and his brother hooked him up with 2 tackle boxes full of gear.
Thought youd get a kick outta this story. Not quite enough to shake loosing a 7C for $50. Nor is my score even remotely on such a scale. But oh well. Fun times to be had and great finds too.
At an antique tackle show I was set up at I got to talking to a guy who had a Thorens TD-160 he no longer had any use for. I talked him into going home to get it and then he traded it to me for an old reel.
Funny how that can happen.
Thanks for sharing your story. I enjoyed it.
I stopped by to see the seller of the 7C today and to look at some of his tackle. He received lots of emails on the 7C, after the fact, and now realizes what he did. He'll be researching values on everything he sells from here on out.
On that note ...I didn't buy any of his tackle, his prices were nuts !

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Just too funny. The lures were made of gold. But the preamp was just an old metal relic. Hey to be fair, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. And you can catch food with a lure. You catch strange looks from folks when they learn what you spent on that preamp LOL...
Im sure that fellow will be doing his homework now. Ive seen that allot over the years.
Its weird how folks view things and change. The neighbor of my pops, which my dad turned into a flipping madman. He once offered to give my dad the profit if he sold his old RV. My dad said, just put in on Clist. Again, now the guy never leaves the thrift stores, damn near literally. Will buy anything he thinks he can turn $10 or more. Jezz.... What a life...
I know Ive written of it here before. But its just such a neat experience and story to me. One of the greatest finds I ever had was free and totally by chance. A really nice old fellow, who was my grandparents neighbor, was selling his old car. A minty ford taurus. Well I needed a cheap, good, used car at the time. So I and my father went over to check it out. Loved it and bought it. Well I sat and chatted with the guy for a couple hrs. Drinking capital brewery beer in his garage he had on tap. He also had stock in the company (wise move great beer :). Well we just sat and chewed the fat. Im sure I mentioned my love for music and old gear. Well fast forward a few years and the nice old man passes. I get a call from my grandparents saying his family wants to know if I care to come over and take a bunch of old electronic stuff out of his basement. They wanted the place empty to sell and heard I enjoyed such things. Very nice of them. I ended up lugging away many boxes of western electric tubes and loads of other old parts and gear. After looking it all over once getting home, filled a mini van. I got a pair of 300Bs, 274, many 310s and lots of others. They were just happy to have it all out of there. Me and the old man talked for hrs and he never once mentioned he worked for Bell Labs after the war. Guess he was just having too much fun drinking beer with me and yucking it up about life. Too funny. I really liked that guy. Theres lots of nice folks in the world who just like a good time.
That was a crazy haul you had! That Bryston and more find for $1K. How the heck did that seller end up with that?!? Looked like a movie theater gutting. Helluva score. Id have a hard time parting with a pair of those 7s to hang on to. The only thing I ever had that came remotely close to that was (minus the WE but that was a fluke that will never happen again) getting a pair of Altec 604 for $50. One being a mint black crinkle paint Hollywood model. These are once in a decade if your lucky moments.
Yeah all these scores are good and well. But doing stuff with my kid, fun out doors, having my health, learning and enlightening myself and others, is IMO, far more rewarding. Again I see what folks become when this flipping and pursuit of money is the end all of life. YUCK!!! Been there and seen it far too close for comfort. As long as I can maintain in life, Ill take good times with my son and family, and a fun filled enlightening youtube video any day. Also I read many guys here talk about what they would spend $$$$ on gear wise. I now get and agree the ones who talking about traveling the world and seeing live shows. Couldnt agree more. Screw sitting in a room with a stereo VS going all over seeing live shows.
Cant take it with you as they say :)
Now at a slightly higher price.
Dave
I can only imagine the feverish flippers lurking in the smog at all these web sites. Just culling knowledge for their hunt. Id also venture to guess most have LOADS of free time on their hands...
Oh well. Was fun while it lasted ;)

...and likely the means to obtain an obscenely expensive cryoed power cable when flipped ;-)
Dean,There is no doubt, that is a 7

Ah. I live nearby in Stratford, CT and I look at at craigslist at least once every day. I totally missed that one. There was a pair of Dunlavy speakers in another part of the state that I missed out on yesterday, but the search is fun and I can't complain, I've done well. Last week I managed to get a McIntosh MX-110 X for $300 but it is far from pristine and being that it's an X not a Z version I have no illusions of it ever being worth much more than I paid for it but it will be a fun project and I should end up with a nice sounding tube preamp/tuner for much less than the going rate.

...so we hunt the same field.
I've had countless scores over the years. One of the best was this stack ...
...for a grand. The Brystons were two 4B-ST and three 7B-ST. That was a good day.
As I was packing all of that into my MINI (!!!), another buyer pulled into the drive. That was uncomfortable !
Happy hunting.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
That was certainly a nice score.
I try to keep this hobby sane(=low budget) and I like to fix things so I look for opportunities to pick up things cheap that might need a little work.
Let me know if you are short of storage space for any of those Brystons. I'd be glad to help you out. :)

If it was legit, I honestly feel your pain.
I passed on a solid state Marantz tuner and integrated amp for 35 bucks in the Salvation Army up here (ONLY because I have a 2230 in the cellar redone by Mike Soccaro (sp?) and they were only there for a couple of hours or so as I thought screw it for the coin I can let them keep the 2230 company so I went back to get them and GONE. Not as bad as your story for sure but in the same vein.
Talk about missing the big one.
What a friggin score. Maybe next time reelsmith.
I'm thinking it is the 7 not the 7t. As far as I know, the 7 has those flat 'paddle' (for lack of a better term) switches in the middle. The center switches on the 7t have round ends with silver caps. I have a 7t and it does have round caps on the center switches but mine is missing all the little silver caps...

Well not quite. But when I have free time or near a comp I look ;)
To loose sleep over such ads is silly IMO. No offense or anything. Just after all these years of using the list these come up more often than one would think. And recently I have a hunch more of them are fellow audio nuts with a more cynical sense of humor than my own.
The fact the fellow said "not the good one" could mean one of two things to me. A) he was a joker that I speak of B) he half knew what he had and simply didnt care. Many would be surprised how many folks fall into the B camp. Clearly most wouldnt knowledgeably sell an item they could fetch hundreds if not thousands for fractional amounts. But some do. And some are simply WAYYY off in what they think their item sells for. Doesnt matter at the end of the day. But Ive also seen ads that clearly were troll ads. Either for a bizarre way of getting ones rocks off. Or culling email addresses for spam $.
In a moment like that one can email ASAP and hope to be first (more so hope the seller cares if your first). Or do what many do, email with an offer slightly more in line. Theres been LOADS of ads clearly geared with the notion of waiting for offers more in tune. Some pathetically veiled as such. Others more blunt of their intentions. Or just sellers which discover money speaks them after the post :) Play the hand as one sees fit.
Around here Ive come to learn of the competition. Half of em just repost their scores on the list after purchase. Some faster than others LOL... Others you see the item on the various audio sites we all know of. And the notion of you emailing within the hr and or it being top of the list. IMO its pretty safe to assume you and 5 other guys did the same. In this job market of today and flipper fever alive and well and spreading... Consider ones self winning the loto if you get said item. Ive done very well for myself over the years. And I now have loads of gear to play with for lifetimes over. Ive no reason to complain or be bitter at this point. Not that it doesnt happen from time to time ;) But overall Im just happy when I land a nice score. Still happens more often than Id believe. Just one has to be pretty crafty with how they do their hunting.
Dont loose any sleep over it Dean. My hunch is on troll post considering what you portray. And there will always be more like it that pop up. To varying levels :). Most important, I and you have amazing gear already. Nothing to feel left out of the fun by.
Keep searching. I, you and 48 other lurkers/readers here will certainly be too LOL ;)
...loosing sleep over it was just an expression.
Although, I'll readily admit to having been damned disappointed for a few hours.
My gut tells me the ad was real. We spoke at length later that evening and I got the sense that it was a real deal.
I collect antique fishing tackle, which he also has, and will visit the scene of the crime over the weekend.
I've responded to ads like this every which way, including letting on that the item is worth more than they think. I've had that work and I've had that blow up in my face because it set off bells and whistles which led them to research what they had and then it ends up on FleaBay.
As for trolls, yep, they are out there.
The thrill is in the hunt !

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Again, as Ive commented on below. Ive rather changed allot of my ways over the years. For the better IMO.
Just talking to people. Sharing thoughts, experiences and just life goes a long way. And not just in scoring crap. Its far more rewarding in simply connecting with folks. Theres been many times I never got the item. But like you describe, make a connection elsewhere. Plus it plants a seed for a would be next time.
The whole blood lust for scoring gear is really passing with me these days. Sure I still play the game. But nothing like I did years before. Just don't care that much about it any more. And I see the way others act and what they become. Just don't wish to be that guy anymore. Theres better ways...
Glad to see you seem to see it the same way.
...I struck out on almost every house call.Since the stuff I collect is pretty old, I'm often dealing with older folks. I once shared my lack of success with an antique dealer friend of mine who asked how I went about things during these house calls. I told him I would show up, be pleasant, chat a bit and then ask to see the stuff.
WRONG !
My friend told me that with older folks you never ask to see the stuff. You sit and you listen to their stories about the weather, their dog, their ailments, how they acquired the stuff and whatever else they feel like telling you. You are the highlight of their day and they are in no hurry to rush you out the door. Be prepared to have a few cups of coffee and some cookies.
I was told to wait for them to say "...so, want to see the stuff ?"
Works like charm. Now, instead of leaving empty handed after 15 minutes, I often leave with all sorts of stuff ...sometimes several hours later.
Time well spent if you are sincere and like meeting some interesting characters ...who will then refer you to other characters. Even if I come away empty handed, I've made a new friend and heard some great stories.

...stuff that I will, more probably than not, never use. Plus, when I move; need I say more?

The only reason I have the caliber of gear I own is from hard work at a job at a younger age. And finding, flipping, repairing gear I find on the list and other places. Theres no way Id now buy some of the audio toys I own. Have a son now and am a far cry from being a stones throw to the 1%.
Ive been lucky and managed to make my hobby pay for itself. Could not justify such expenses anymore. Nor afford it otherwise with many of the toys.
Id venture to guess allot, not all, but allot of the Clist regulars are in a somewhat similar camp. I kinda doubt whoever is buying whatever StOphile class A toy is also hawking the list. Im sure some but not the majority is my guess. Im kind of a bottom feeding by those standards. Not that some of my gear isn't high end. But most is home made or DIY of sorts. Or old manufactured gear. No Krell amps, Magico speakers and $7K cables here Im afraid. Nor would I care for em anyway. Quite happy with the sound I have regardless of price.
This isn't to say many, maybe yourself, are far from wealthy and simply choose to live different than us nuts seeking odd stuff. Just kinda a fun hobby to some also. But yes, Im the son of a crazy hoarder / flipper too so as time goes on Im slowly shaking the awful disease :)
But yes all I need to do is look to my fathers neighbor. The fellow owns his own business which does well enough to make a living. Pops showed him his crazy ways. Now the guy NEVER leaves the thrift stores and else where. Bastard looks for much of what I do also. Thanks dad.... grumbles.... But on a somewhat positive note its also a wake up call. GET A LIFE!!!! And what is life all for and about at the end of the day. That's why I take a self deprecating humor to this madness. And try and learn and reflect on it all too. Don't live and die by the acquisition ways anymore. Just try and keep it a fun hobby if I can :)
I can't tell for sure or did the four center switches have metal ends?

...a 7T looks like this...
Metal center switches and three 1/4" phone jacks under them.
