Once I corrected the polarity issue with the tweeter replacement, they sounded fine. Obviously they have no low bass, but for TV vocals they are fine. The sony has terrible audio from its own speakers, but the line out signal seems good. Voices are more natural and less boomy now. Also, vary pleasant with the cable music stations. This room has pretty bad acoustics, so we watch movies and have the fancier 5.1 system in the living room.

Follow Ups:
You could add one of the readily available 10 inch subs, and have a great 3-piece setup, far better than the modern small-woofer speakers commonly used nowadays. Or, you could DIY a small sub.
Yup, that.s a thought I had as well.

I was using an M&K that I bought from a thrift store for around $30. It broke. I am planning to try and fix it, but in the meantime, I found a 10" down-firing sub, which looked very good but I can't remember the name. I looked it up. It used to be sold by Audio Advisor and had decent specks. It sounds great with my Spendors. My point is that with the popularity of subwoofers in home theater system, it is one of the few useful things you can find easily at the thrift stores. I see them all the time. I would have a room full of them if I bought every good one that I saw.
Alternatively, Part Express has some very cool parts to put together a subwoofer system. They have them in all price ranges.

The gain from the Sony line out circuit is strong. Should I run a direct feed to a powered sub from the line out and bypass the magnavox? The magnavox only has L and R, of course. I have a separate in line volume pot for the magnavox as the sony seems not to be able to control the line out volume.

I run my subwoofer from the pre-out of my preamp. I prefer not to put anything between the main amp and speakers. I run the speakers full range and roll in the sub. if you plan to cross high, you might get better integration running from the power amp speaker outs. So it depends on you implementation.

So Dave,
If I understand, I can split my RCA line out signal from the tv and feed the sub and the magnavox tube amp/ front speakers at the same time. then I set the sub hz level and volume. However, I have to adjust sub volume every time I adjust front speaker volume?
Thanks

Does you TV control the volume? If you split the signal out to the sub before the volume control the volume of the subwoofer will not go up and down with you main speakers.
Dave
I did as you suggested and split the signal, after my in line volume pot. Sub is rolled in at about 80hz, still playing with that...adds a lot to TV shows.

Looks like you've got it!
Dave
No, tv does not control audio out volume. However, Could i put the splitter after the inline volume contol?
