As a wood worker the veneering job on that cabinet used some pretty poor veneering strips. I'm not trying to flame you. You should never see have that much, if any, new growth (whilt patches). However you do make an outstanding point. Some of those cabinets were almost furniture grade craftsmanship.

Interesting observation, no flames felt!..as a fellow wood worker, here's a cabinet I made for my Marantz 2226. Can you guess what type of wood it is? (Kind of unusual choice)

Redwood!
I have seen quite a bit of interesting redwood in my time, such as curley grain, lace burl, rippled, and so forth. This was described to me by the person I bought it from as "birds eye redwood". It has clear lacquer on it.

thanks for the lesson. Redwood wasn't what I was thinking. I didn't think white pine was correct either but ...

I missed the obvious clue! From the land of Redwood! Not much found here in the other LA., I have a cabinet I made out of pecky cypress though! Thanks!
I'm gonna have to go with white pine. But I like the knotty look.
I'm making a stereo stand with a tulipwood top. Try getting that stuff now.
I guess white pine.
