My proposition is that you post a single picture of a favorite cabinet surface (speaker, amp, whatever), in terms of looks, that you own or have owned. I know there are some beauties out there! Here's my offering of the top of a KLH 5 speaker:

I love oak and Arts & Craft furniture, so I love these Altecs
Klipsch Forte 1 Oiled Walnut.
Almost forgot I owned this. RWA chip amp finished in Burled Walnut by Louis at Omega Loudspeakers.
This is a speaker and stand (one of a pair) I made for my daughter a few years ago. My wife liked them so much I had to make another pair for us.
Oak ply over MDF with solid Oak front.
Solid walnut with rosewood for the cover
Hi,
Very Nice Work! I may end up covering/thickening my baffles with solid Black Walnut similar to yours. Which Driver is hidden by the cover?
Best Regards,
Chuck
I did not construct the baffle. The driver is an Altec 756A
Imagine the market price for a piece of empty cabinets produced today of the same quality as the cabinets of the Fives. My pair sit next to my Klipsch Heresy IIs and I can feel the embarrassment the HIIs must feel. Only weakness was KLH's not using a screw and captured nut system for securing drivers but, few companies did or do this.

Lousy pic but I really liked the wood on my former SX-1250. This was as found at Salvation Army store about 10 years ago.
That narrows it down to the trusty Discwasher SC1!
My first veneering job...for our Dual daily driver turntable in the kitchen. The wife asked for the upgrade to improve WAF over the stock trashy plastic base.
I can not imagine a tt or even a single record in the kitchen. One look at the oven hood after only a couple of weeks after cleaning convinced me long ago only use a sacrificial radio, something cheap like a Bose Wave; not even a Radio Shack knockoff of the Sony table radios should go in there.

What a great idea! I wonder if the wife will go for it. After all, I do all the cooking!
That Dual looks great!
Dave
My son (now a 20 something) figured that everyone had a turntable in the kitchen because his best friend's parents across the street had one in their kitchen, too. Now that he's on his own he misses having one in his own kitchen.
Every kitchen should have one!

The cabinet of my Wharfdales W40D's.
Kinda crappy picture, they look brand new.
Dave
My W90's look great too. They were refinished by my late father.

I love a "bursted" Les Paul guitar, so it stands to reason that I think these sunburst Thiel's are the cat's pajamas.

Or if low efficiency current hogs like the Thiel's aren't you thing, then take a look at these Abbeys......

Looks like something that should be in a pagan temple on the alter awaiting the sacrifice of some youthful virgin vinyl and surround by a few chromed chassis Futtermans lr Carver Super 7s, all aglow in anticipation of the life giving stream of satisfaction as a vinyl virgin is sacrificed, never to be a virgin ever more until the end of time.

Love wood, love walnut. I lusted after this speaker for years "just" for the looks alone. Finally found a mint pair and they sound great with whatever I put in front of them. Big Time lucky score. Listening to them in my home office as I type.
I have never owned them, but I lusted after a pair of K-horns in zebra wood, when I sold Klipsch.
Dave
As a wood worker the veneering job on that cabinet used some pretty poor veneering strips. I'm not trying to flame you. You should never see have that much, if any, new growth (whilt patches). However you do make an outstanding point. Some of those cabinets were almost furniture grade craftsmanship.

Interesting observation, no flames felt!..as a fellow wood worker, here's a cabinet I made for my Marantz 2226. Can you guess what type of wood it is? (Kind of unusual choice)

Redwood!
I have seen quite a bit of interesting redwood in my time, such as curley grain, lace burl, rippled, and so forth. This was described to me by the person I bought it from as "birds eye redwood". It has clear lacquer on it.

thanks for the lesson. Redwood wasn't what I was thinking. I didn't think white pine was correct either but ...

I missed the obvious clue! From the land of Redwood! Not much found here in the other LA., I have a cabinet I made out of pecky cypress though! Thanks!
I'm gonna have to go with white pine. But I like the knotty look.
I'm making a stereo stand with a tulipwood top. Try getting that stuff now.
I guess white pine.

You said post my favorite wood cabinet piece of gear and now you insult my discriminating acumen by telling me I need glasses? If it was 1924,I would bet that piece would be state of the art..LOL
BTW,I did have to up my reading glasses from 1.75 to 2.0.

First off I love the variations in the original post pics. I have a pile of kiln dried black walnut, cherry, magnolia and cypress. I will usually pick the most unusual pattern with the most color changes and knots to heighten the grain. There is a certain beauty in a clear straight grained piece of wood. But that isn't what the custom gunmakers and wood turners chose. As far as ID on your custom case. I wish I could zoom in to really see the grain. I am going to guess black gum. But I wouldn't bet on it! One think about Mikey's fav! Vinyl is Final!
True true true Chuck.

This is the oiled walnut used in the MK-17 Musicaire series, a 3-way acoustis suspension design. I've had these since 1971, and they cost $49.95 ea new. Note the flat finish. Some lemon oil funiture polish whould give them a bit more gloss.
The walnut veneer plants were hummin' in the 70's! Looks like new.

Don't have them anymore, but not long ago I had a pair of Dyna A25 speakers that seemed to have bookmatched walnut veneer. They were beautiful.
Picked this up yesterday, love the wood. Somebody put the black cloth on but it looks good.
