I mean a new cart, not an NOS or older used B&O cart. A NOS may or may not work or last long. B&O's website sucks so I'm not going to try and see what they "have to say". See for yourself I was on it last week.
$200 and up at Soundsmith which is fine, they are a good company, we bought from them back in the day. It's getting to the point now though even if you get a decent B&O table for $50 your going to have to invest another $200.I'm speaking of getting one as a secondary system, garage etc or for a friend. Now the money is a bit too much for that. I have a chance to get a 3404 that needs a cart.

Used a Soundsmith SMMC4 for several years in a Beogram TX2. Excellent sound but the bonded elliptical stylus gets tizzy on a lot of my favorite records. I paid $150.00 for the cartridge new, it's now $250.00.
I had the original non-functioning MMC4 cart sitting around all these years, so I sent it to Axel Schurholz in Germany for a rebuild--new aluminum cantilever and Shibata stylus. (Note: Soundsmith no longer rebuilds MMC-series carts).
The cost of the rebuild was about $200 USD, shipping to and from Germany was another twenty bucks.
IMO, this is the way to go. You'd need to spend nearly $600.00 to get a Soundsmith cartridge with a line contact stylus. I prefer the sound of the B&O cartridge as well though this is subjective.

Thanks, nice post. A local 3404 for $50 is calling me. I had one in the late 70's. One channel out in the MMC20EN.

Yes, I poped into a B&O salon last holiday season just for a look-
asked about cartridges - and they gave me a sountsmith card!
I have an old B&O TT - purchased for my then girlfriend (now wife- of 21+yrs)
It was worth it...
Happy listening
I do like them. I had a 3404 in the late 70's with the EN nude elliptical. It was pretty darn good. I'd love to find a linear tracker and service it . That would be worth sinking Soundsmith money into I think. I wonder what linear model is considered the best? 4004? 8002? Anyone know?

Although this turntable has been on the bench many times for adjustments and lamps over the years, it has served me so well. We're talking 35 years here. I bought it in November of 1980. It has treated my records with great care, as have the few B&O cart/stylus and the Soundsmith that's in it now. My 40+ year old records sound like they were just opened.By the way, I have never cleaned my records with anything other than a super soft cloth.
It does well with warped records too!!

Nice! I am a B&O fan and bought my 3404 in about 1979 to improve an acoustic feedback problem with my Denon.

one very nice turntable. Specially that tangential drive for the platter. very stable. once these tables are set up correctly you will have to spend a lot to better it.
I forgot to say I was jealous too
