It never gets up to speed, it just turns a few revolutions and then stops.

Lets make sure the laser is reading the disc..First,get a CD you know that's a CD not a DVD and read the amount of tracks that on the CD..Lets say has 13 tracks..Put it in the unit and the laser should read that there are 13 tracks put it in the display..If it doesn't read it and I assumed you cleaned the laser, that means either the laser is bad or the drawer isn't closing to where the laser can read it.
If it reads the disc and says that are 13 tracks, then start the unit and spin the cd by hand as it's starting up..If that gets it to play, you have either a weak motor or capacitors wearing out in the motor drive circuit.

Hi Mikey,
Can you get the motors? I have a very special player that needs a spindle motor. It is a Toshiba SD-9200, and it sound great when it is working CD/DVD-A,HDCD). It is also built like a tank. I have another Toshiba that I was going to try to swap, but it would be better to have them both working. It is a known problem with these units.

probably out of another unit or on Ebay.

I have a Toshiba HD DVD player that sounds like crap. Hopefully the transports or parts from the transports are interchangeable. I have a feeling the HD DVD player did not get much use. There is some griping on the digital asylum about the cheesy spindle motor that the put in this otherwise high-end player.

I have been using a cd that plays in my other unit, so I know that part is ok. I doubt it is turning enough to read anything. It only turns about 1 or 2 revolutions before it stops and then it shows all 0's across the screen, and it only does that occasionally. Most times it does nothing and comes up with 0's across the screen. I tried turning it by hand after the tray closed, but it did not start spinning.
I have the top off and have cleaned the laser. I can see it from the side and can see no light coming from it either with a cd in or without. Should I be able to?

You need to look at the display to see if the number of tracks on the CD are showing up.Before you even push the play button,it should read the number of tracks on the CD.If it doesn't,we have to find out why and that is either due the door noit being closed all the way,or the laser itself not
reading the disc.

That's what I was trying to say Mike; all I am doing is closing the door, I have never pushed the play button even once. It just goes to 0's across the screen. It never spins more than a couple of revolutions. The door is closing properly from what I can see, so it might be the laser.
I called a Denon dealer today and he said he would take a look at it and tell me what it needs to get it running and if the parts are available. He said he will call me if it is going to be over $175 to fix it, and if I don't want to fix it he will only charge me $25 for the look see. Sounds fair to me.

well if the door closed and sets and cycles, the laser is not picking up the data from the CD and it's most likely the problem..I also have a 3520 with issues but I'm going to get back to it..I need belts first.

Mike, is it possible to manually move the laser tracker and see if it resets?
I had that once with a Luxman. The tracking mechanism wasn't rest.
Basically once you see these problems it's time to replace the entire drive.

If it's hanging up in its track,yes..I have done that a few times. There is also a mode type rheostat adjustment(s) on these units which was like the mode switch on the old VCRs and the potentiometer mode switch would get dirty and the unit would not cycle properly. In the case of the VCR,it could be between play and rewind and it wouldn't go until you cleaned and reset the mode switch..You always did that with an ohmmeter..

Vinnie...
It could be that one of the plastic tabs that engages the drive system when the drawer closes is either out of adjustment or broken off.
I believe the Marantz uses a Phillips drive, which may mean there is more than one belt that can be stretched out of its working size and/or it has drive gears that break.
I believe you can buy a whole new drive on Ebay.
I know this because of a long, frustrating experience with a Phillips LHH 1000 that was finally consigned to the electronics dump.
Good luck.
