I wonder if it got to $17 and change. I would have jumped at that. I feel badly for the current state of the Rat Shack...they did all sorts of neat things.

Yes but they abandoned what got them to be a success. It is the beginning of companies finding out that bandwagoning and jumping on the latest trends has a downside . They turned into cell phone shack. The profit always came from the small parts and other sales often less than $20, not the big tickets.

The little stuff brought people into the store and then they exited with a pair of Mark I's for the den! A 15" woofer could not be overlooked (pg. 18 of the same 1977 catalog). Actually, one of the best speakers RS ever built was the probably the two-way Optimus 1 (in 1B form in 1977 catalog) Consumer reports gave it high marks and the price was only $89

Mark II's weren't bad and were significantly more neutral than Mark I's, but the I's looked cooler.

In the world of speakers with 15-inch woofers, 90 percent of it is about looking cool...of course, sheer volume helps.
If designed correctly, you can get deeper and/or lower bass. However, many designs put them in too small a cabinet, where there is no real advantage to a 12" woofer, other than looks and bragging rights. I think he Mach II is big enough to take advantage of he 15" woofer.
