Yes, the tweeter level controls on the backs of the speakers next to the speaker wire connectors are the most likely problem. Try turning them back and forth a few times and see if there are any spots where the speakers sound better.
These are definitely worth something, although probably not a ton - since the drivers are all there and the cabinets and grills are whole I'd expect they'd get at least $75 from the auction site. I certainly wouldn't just throw them away. If nothing else, donate them to your local Salvation Army or similar.

I have a pair of these AR's and when the crossover is rebuilt and the high frequency control is taken out of the circuit these are very good speakers.
That's how I've wired mine, too, but have since learned its incorrect insofar as the pot at minimum setting has a 16 ohm resistance? (going on memory here).
To get the sound AR intended, a resistor of that value should be wired into the circuit in place of the pot.
