Sorry for the poor description- like I said, I'm a complete novice to all this.
It just sounds super echo-y and hard to really make out what is being said when watching them with a TV show. I'm sure there is a perfect term to describe what they sound like, but I just don't know it. Thanks again for your help and patience with me!

"super echo-y" sounds to me like you hooked them up to your rear channel surround outputs.
Well, they weren't really designed to produce TV show dialog, but music, so try testing them with music. They might wake up and show you something.

Since you are a self-admitted noob, I would ask what you are using to test them?
Your description reminds me of someone trying to judge speakers meant for 2-channel audio after hooking them up to a "surround receiver" and since there are only 2 speakers hooked up the Home Theater receiver is confused (not sending complete signal to speakers). And as such if may not be a reflection of the condition of the speakers, but operator error. Hope that makes sense.
