I have a AX-570 integrated and I would like to use the power amp section with a tube line stage or tube pre-amp. I will only be using one source, so essentially all I need is a volume control right or am I off base on this. Suggestions please.
I previously tried this with a Wright pre-amp, but the Wright had too much gain and I lost usable volume control(I could only go up to about 9:00 o'clock)
Thanks Bob

Good news: the amp is pretty sensitive at 1V for rated output. That puts into into passive territory since many sources have greater output than that.
Bad news: its input impedance is very low at 10k ohms which is neither passive nor tube friendly. You need a very low output impedance of the source or preamp.
You will likely need to experiment to find a good match.
what do you think about the Decware ZBOX, could it be a match?
with its "lower than 1k ohm" output impedance, it would be worse than many tube line stages having say 250 ohm outputs.
You need something on the order of 100 ohms to drive that amp properly. I would wait to get a more flexible power amp.
remove the jumpers in the back and connect your pre amp to the MAIN IN.

Rick, I realize I can remove the jumpers, I am looking for a pre-amp/line stage.
Bob
You need something with a cathode follower stage or a hybrid with a fet follower. Tube preamps without a follower stage, like the Dynaco PAS or the Conrad Johnson PV-3 will have very noticeable base roll-off.
