Pete;
The sound may have improved a bit.......or not.
It's just slightly different. I attribute that to the difference in brand more than tube type. I have been lead to believe the 7199 and 6U8 are basically the same with a different "pin out".
In the past I have found RCA tubes to sound a bit chimey. Sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes it can be a bit much.
I know one thing; I'm 46 and God willing, I will need a pair of 7199's at some point. For the absurd prices the 7199 is commanding, it just makes sense to go the 6U8/6GH8A route.
Mikey (Samra) was the one who told me to do it so I had no second thoughts about doing it.
I'm going to roll in some 6P14P-ER tubes in place of the Amprex 7189 next week.

I see your big teflons there. Hope they are great in your Sherwood. I may give the 6GH8 thing a try. I wonder if 6BL8s would work as well, very close.The 6P14P-EB are fantastic in my S5000 (bought as NOS); better than the RCA 7189s.

I have a set of 6P14P-EB's, but only tried them once. I'm still using the Phillips tubes until the GO!
So how do you like your Sherwood. I have to be honest, I can't imagine ever getting anything better. Or anything like it (sound quality wise. At least anything I can afford that is!!!! Heck, I can live with my Sherwood forever!
enjoy
