I got these 7199 adapters and tubes for $35 with free shipping (ebay).
They work great! If anything there seems to be be slightly more "balls" to the sound. I just figured I would save the Sherwood 7199's for a rainy day.
Highly recommended. For the price of a single used 7199 you get two adapters and two nos tubes.
By the way, my Samra'd Sherwood S-5000 sounds even better than it did when I first got it back a couple months ago. Maybe those Russian Teflon coupling caps just take some time to bloom - Dunno? The sound is W-I-D-E open now.
I have been driving a pair of Paradigm Reference 40 v3 to great effect.
I will have my Cornscala's back soon - Can't wait!
I hope you all have a great year.

Follow Ups:
Looks like a good way to go, considering the shortage of 7199's. Even if you are lucky enough to find NOS 7199's, they are likely to hum because of heater to cathode leakage. Of course, 6U8's can hum as well, but you can find them in sufficient quantity to cull out the noisy ones.
I have the same set up. The original Sherwood/Sylvania 7199s test very high and sound good and I had no plan to change, but wondered about the conversion kits. Thanks for the info - you think it actually improved a bit? 6GH8s, even Mullard etc, are cheap high quality tubes.Yes, the russian PIO caps improve with use.
best, HNY

Pete;
Sorry, I didn't see the second part of your post.
I actually have Russian Teflon coupling caps rather than PIO's.
Mikey thought they were better than PIO's for my application and since there is room (barely) in the original S-5000, we went that direction. They are huge, about twice as big as the K40 PIO cap!

I love those teflon caps in the output stage.

That's the one Mike.
This thing just keeps getting better.
I have some threaded brass footers to install on it when I get some ambition.
I hope you got some sun and relaxation over the holidays.

Pete;
The sound may have improved a bit.......or not.
It's just slightly different. I attribute that to the difference in brand more than tube type. I have been lead to believe the 7199 and 6U8 are basically the same with a different "pin out".
In the past I have found RCA tubes to sound a bit chimey. Sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes it can be a bit much.
I know one thing; I'm 46 and God willing, I will need a pair of 7199's at some point. For the absurd prices the 7199 is commanding, it just makes sense to go the 6U8/6GH8A route.
Mikey (Samra) was the one who told me to do it so I had no second thoughts about doing it.
I'm going to roll in some 6P14P-ER tubes in place of the Amprex 7189 next week.

I see your big teflons there. Hope they are great in your Sherwood. I may give the 6GH8 thing a try. I wonder if 6BL8s would work as well, very close.The 6P14P-EB are fantastic in my S5000 (bought as NOS); better than the RCA 7189s.

I have a set of 6P14P-EB's, but only tried them once. I'm still using the Phillips tubes until the GO!
So how do you like your Sherwood. I have to be honest, I can't imagine ever getting anything better. Or anything like it (sound quality wise. At least anything I can afford that is!!!! Heck, I can live with my Sherwood forever!
enjoy
