If the switch you call mute is the same as the Direct switch on the CA610II in that it basses the tone amp, it may be the culprit. My 610 had a similar illness and I finally traced it there. The prior own likely never used it. I do. It's a dog clean and took repeated hits over a month before it permanently, I hope, stopped. I was at the point of pulling the board and desoldering the switch.
You may also want to contact Merrylander on audiokarma.com. He is a resident guru on Yamaha. Before retiring from the bench he would buy refurb and sell them at a loss it seemed but made it up in volume. He also made beautiful cabinets.

Thanks for the info guys. I disconnected the preamp from the amp via jumpers on the back - buzz is still there. So, that means the problem is in the preamp, right? Currently it won't buzz if speaker selector is on "off" (headphones only). If I turn it to A or B (even with no speakers connected), it will start to buzz. Then if I go back to "off" and pull the headphone plug out and re-insert IT STOPS!
I'd really like to keep this unit - it does sound great - and has gobs of power - I have some AKG K240 Studio phones that sound great with it - they're 600 Ohms!
I spoke to a local repair guy - seemed to know his stuff - I may take it to him, but I'm leery cause I've been disjointed in the past.
Yeah - I'd love to have someone like merrylander refurb it, but even if he was still doing them, the shipping gets pricey.
If you disconnected the preamp and the buzz is still there then the issue is in the power amp. If the noises is in the preamp, once disconnected, you would not be getting it at the speakers and headphones. So, that is a good start.
I think if Merrylander has retired. I suggested contacting him as he may have experienced your problem and know of the solution. These Yamahas have features not found on other units and it is more likely you will get the best possible suggestion from someone who knows these amps.

With the jumpers removed - if the switches and volume knob are having an effect - doesn't that mean I am listening to the PREAMP? Excuse my ignorance : ) Remember, I am listening thru headphones at this point.
