I also find almost all the new speakers I've listened to leave me very uninspired. I'm gonna agree with you on that one!!
I think I should have brought forward the point of what I meant by new - I meant KITS.
Many of the kits available today are far better in both quality and FARRRRR better in design than what you can get off the shelf. Every time I look for a new set of speakers I end up coming back to kits. Knowledgeable designers worked out the warts. And FAR better quality parts and drivers than commercial brands. eg, look at the SR-71 design! For $400 you ARE NOT getting better!!!!

Hi Charles,
I agree. If you build it yourself you will save tons of money and get a great piece of gear, whether speakers, amps, or preamps. You are cutting out all the middle men.......and providing your own labor. I am listening to a preamp I put together for about $800 that will trash most commercial gear for under $3000. I have no doubt if you spend $1500 you could build a killer pair of speakers and I totally believe you that $400 will build you a very nice pair.
cheers,
Don
Yeap, if you read Zaph Audios site on the SR-71 (parts cost $400) he states that this speaker rivals speakers costing several thousand dollars. In THIS case it's not an exaggeration.
