OK I got some real good advice on the vinyl site, got some great people over there but I thought I would run it by you guys too just to get some more opinions and past experience.
Hear is the deal, have my Dynaco Pas 3x stock, and a pair of Eico HF-65 mono preamps what would you rebuild or change if you were into LPs as your mail source? Looking to make the phono section really sing for me.
Thanks if anyone cares to reply

I haven't heard the HF-65, but I used to have an HF-85 and the phono on it was excellent, particularly with some modifications detailed in the Yahoo Eico group.

The PAS 3X phono section is a tough one to get results when the signal has to go thru the rest of the preamp. So, I am with Eli's advice.
The unit has a basic circuit.
DO you want an operating piece of Vintage Kit?
an up-dated unit?
or a hot-rodded unit?
The Basic RIAA circuit has not changed, however the quality of the Rs and Cs in the circuit can be improved with newer components.
the unit is a good pre-amp, and with upgraded parts - quality not values - it could be what you are looking for-

6bq what I really want is quality sound coming from my TT
I have the Dynaco and the pair of Eico 65s sitting in my audio room currently using the Dynaco Pas 3X. Both set ups are in decent condition but the Dynaco could use some upgrade I would think, the Eico much more so I want the most I can get out of gear I have and my experience has always been that the vintage equipment when set up right gives me the most satisfaction. Maybe I am missing something? And should move on to newer equpement but it would be a shame to not at least try and put the vintage gear into the maximum usage. Your thougts would be very much apprediated.
Thank you for your time and thoughts.
One of the primary undercurrents in the Vintage vs new equipment conversations has to do w/ Frequency Response -
as a vintage unit - with the original bits - there is typically a roll off at both ends or the spectrum.
So - if the desire is for a 'updated' piece of kit - then the question comes to how much to update the vintage (plus the cost of the vintage kit) versus new - or newER....
Eli's comment is directed at this part of the equation - either go the AVA full upgrade (whole unit) or use a different unit/circuit.
The rational for this comes from the reality that while you can upgrade the Rs & Cs in the circuit - w/o a decently updated/graded power supply and line stage - you won't hear the advantages.
In re-reading your OP, and the OP on Vinyl - you actually have two questions:
1: Dynaco or Eico?
2: with either - what to upgrade?
I do not have experience with either - however I have a pair of McIntosh C-8 preamps that have a very flexible Phone stage (Like the Eico)- having been designed & built when there were lots of different record EQs in use - however in order to get it up and running - I plan on replacing all the Rs & Cs, and rebuilding the PS (a pair of MC-30s)... I am doing this more out of a desire to re-create my Grandfather's HiFi system than looking for the last word in resolution.
If your vinyl collection has lots of Older recordings and you want/need the additional EQs - then the Eico is the answer.
If your collection is mostly Newer stereo LPs - then I am not sure - which way to suggest - I might actually still vote for the Eico - two chassis/Dual Mono - better channel seperation....
The Dynaco equipment was well designed - but designed for a Price Point. -
There are better circuits from that time - Pilot, Fisher, McIntosh, Marantz - and the "modern" tube Phono stages can be wonderful.
Which gets me back to the question I posed earlier/above -
Do you want Vintage ? -
stock? or upgraded? or Hot-rodded?
I realize that the PAS-3 in-hand is tempting to use/upgrade - and It may be what you want - but there are shortcomings in the design and execution of the Whole unit - it is not as though the Phono section is the only part that needs attention.
The same applies to the Eico - with the adder that there are two to update/grade...
Winter Project - Yes - sounds like fun
simple decision - no, but that's why we are Here in the asylum...
I hope to get to my McIntosh units soon - but I also want to Re-build the Phono stage in My AI M-3 for my Main Rig....and I have a simple Phono stage that I need to finish for a friend - now that I have my soldering iron back......
I do like Vintage equipment, and I agree that when properly set up it can sound excellent!
Perhaps the answer for you is to use the Dynaco - and work on the Eicos, then swap and see how you like the Eicos -
Happy listening
"Looking to make the phono section really sing for me."
IMO, you should forget the vintage stuff and look at either my tweaked RCA setup or something from Bottlehead.
The PAS can be completely rebuilt along the lines Audio by Van Alstine suggests, but (no surprise) it will cost you.
