Hi all,
I know this is sort of common knowledge to those of us who try to revive dead vintage tube gear....but I just wanted to say that Heyboer transformers just came through again. They make a lot of replacement iron for the undersized power transformers in some Eico pieces and others. So I had a thread on here recently where I was seeking info on a George Wright AG1000 preamp that had a blown power transformer. It seems that a number of them did this. Not a fault of the design, heaven knows George was a master designer. Just that he got a bad batch of transformers that got out into the world. Unfortunately this preamp has a very small chassis. It is really cute, but cramped. So I finally figured out all the transformer specs from the circuit, clues, and various posts from other inmates with similar models. Also a long conversation with Jim McShane. Thanks Jim! I determined that there was no Hammond or Edcor or any other modern transformer I could find that had the right specs and would fit in the small space. So it was either send this one out for rewinding or call Heyboer. Arlyn said they could wind me a transformer that would fit and we were able to get over spec'd windings by just increasing the size a hair. It will fit and the best part is that for just an order of a single transformer they are doing it for $85. With shipping it will be $100. I cannot get this one rewound for that cost. I know that Heyboer power transformers are good quality having used them in a few Eicos in the past. So...a shameless plug for Heyboer transformers - I am not in any way associated with them. If you need a custom wound replacement for a power transformer then look them up and contact them. It might be cheaper than a rewind.

With companies trying to gouge you at every corner, I am shocked to see this very specialized work done at such a reasonable price. I had seen other posts praising Heyboer, but had no idea that custom transformer could be had for so little. I will keep them in mind if I need something like this!
Also it is heartening to see the Asylum community come together to help a fellow inmate. It make the trolls more bearable!

I wonder if Heyboer could reproduce the HK Cit II OPT... I bet they could sell a bunch if they did.
Why don't you ask them? It would be interesting to see what price they gave you.
IIRC our old friend Pak Protector tried getting it done a few years ago, but I don't believe he ever was able to get one made.
FWIW, I recall Doug going after various Peerless iron inc. the 16431 as in the Heath W6 (arguably a worthy competitor to the C-II iron). Mike Lefevre didn't appreciate these efforts and Heyboer ended up in an uncomfortable situation as a result. Doug attempted to allay Mike's concerns by making a group project out of a reproduction of the S265Q IIRC. The plan was to have Heyboer wind the coils and provide the lams which we would then stack and vacuum impregnate. I was interested and contacted Doug directly about participating but nothing ever came of it. Most of this activity occurred on another forum so not much here to search out.
In the end, it seems Heyboer is glad to reproduce onesie-twosies of just about anything within limits of material availability (i.e. no nickel lams) but won't do quantities of "protected" designs. Not sure if there's anthing special about C-II OPT materials so maybe it could be reproduced. Has anyone inquired about this?

you are correct in your assessment about the W6 iron being a worthwhile competitor to the Cit 2 iron..You are also correct in what went on with the competition and Heyboer is winding me a pair of S-271 OPTs and I'm getting some nickel lams as we speak. There is a stack of 10 or 15 that go in the center but neither Heyboer nor Magnequest put them in unless you can score the nickel lams as they are hard to get in smaller quantities.I don't know if Magnequest uses them now or not in the larger iron but my guess is they don't except upon special request and availability.

...in small quantities??!!! The only way I've been able to do that is by scavenging bad 16309s from W5s. ;-)

all the best,

I contacted them for a choke in a specific DCR and space constraints, and they promptly responded with a design and specs, and delivered in short order after I'd confirmed. Two thumbs way up!
Yes, it is refreshing to deal with companies that actually want your business and treat you like you just walked in the front door of a small town business. Antek is pretty nice too, and of course McShane is a pleasure to deal with.
Phil will be very happy to know this..I will be speaking to him tomorrow after school..I use a lot of his iron and its superb.
