In my experience listening and building amplifiers - for a PP, UL amp - the heart of the matter is the Output Transformer.
As good as the McIntosh Transformers are, the Marantz are that much better.
The winding of an output transformer is equal parts Art & science.
and if you are going to use feedback - how that winding gets inserted - is not a trivial matter.
At one point (some 20+ years ago) I was involved in manufacturing PP tube amps 100w/ch stereo - we wound them from the bobbin up- stacked the lams and finished them - then matched the -3dB down point for each pair / amp.
you might be surprised in the variability that those units had at gross mfg-
what ended up in the amps were the cream - and it was worth every once of effort.
There are a few mfgs that have come close - but the output transformers of the 8b are among the rarefied few that are excellent - IMHO
Happy listening

I've heard similar claims about various OPTs, which again is where it gets confusing. HK CitII, MC, Fairchild, Fisher 500C, Acrosound, Peerless, UTC LS, HSM, etc. Why bother with the other stuff (IT, film caps, grid chokes, DHTs, regulators, CCS etc.) if an amp with good OPT's and none of the other stuff will outdo them?
Thanks for your comments/story.

I heard this story years ago and have no idea if it is true or not. Sid Smith hand wound the prototype 8B output transformers, liked the sound and sent out the drawings. He didn't like the transformers that came back and hand wound every 8B transformer.
Does anyone know if this is true or not?
