New to the forms. Just thought I would start out with something I love. "Marantz"
Attention: No Marantz's were hurt in this transformation. All original parts still exist.
Though I would do something a little different. Of course I love the European look, so I had to make the 19 in European Style and I did also make it in a silver, with and without the uper lettering and "serial#"
I started out with An original faceplate. Had it laser measured for accuracy. Had mostly hand drawn artwork. Then plates were laser cut out of one sheet of aluminum. Then cleaned and brushed nod either black anodized or clear anodized was applied. Black plates got laser etching for the printing. Silver plates got two prt baked on black Apoxy. Sounds measly enough, but was quite complicated. But all in all. We'll worth it.
I do all of to for my personal collection then sell off the left overs to try to help others out or that may just want to change it up.
With the 19 I added just a little bit. The blank space up top that usually has model and logo up top "on other models" I decided to put "Saul B" and " Legendary" and my "Serial #" to fill it in.
This faceplate posted a few more challenges than the others " I already have made these models 2230/2245/2270/2275/2325/4400 " I also chose not to screen print this one, but instead I did "Laser Etching" so no screen print (Will never wear off). Once again, Marantz did not chosse to use any standard fonts which most seem to think they did, but they changed things just a little bit in order to make things difficult (Alot of hand drawn art work).
The custom calibrate badge is aluminum with what looks like a standard beveled edge, yet it was just off enough where I had to have a special cutter made to replicate that beveled edge.
More pictures with the silver plate soon to come this week.
All in all, I always love the Euorpean look, so once again here is my newest creation. Thanks.
P.S. One day I must buy a real camera instead of using my iPhone.

You have the skills, experience and the contacts to sell to damn near anyone with a vintage piece who would LOVE to either have a repro original faceplate or some other color, font, whatever. You explained one-offs would not be cheap with your current suppliers, but I bet that could be addressed easily enough, and most people who are looking for a custom product don't really care about cost anyway. One person asked about a 10B. Do you know how much you could charge for a repro 10B tuner faceplate?

Thanks for all the nice words, I do want to make as many models as possible to help out as many people as possible but at the same time I want to bring people a good quality reproduction plate at a reasonable cost so I'm working each and every day to try bring cost down and more models available. So maybe one day I can just take requests for whatever model someone wants. Thanks
Also look into people that rebuild these things. Go over to AudioKarma's Marantz group. GEEZEEEEEEE, I'm bet you'll sell a million of those plates over there!!!!
I post there all the time. And one complaint that always comes up is faceplate cosmetics.
Thanks I am a member there and have been posting there but thanks again.
how much would it cost if you branched out and made other faceplates. What would be a rough cost to fabricate a plate from scratch? And don't forget some profit, you deserve it!!!
I realize this is a VERY highly specialized market. But if a company can sell a single capacitor for $300, then I'm sure you could sell a facepalte for several hundred as well.
Most likely a lot of plates would be a "one off". But heck, you may be dealing with some hard core audio people here!!!!

Here is a place that will make any panel you design. They supply free software for the design. I have had several panels made, and they cost around $50 each.
Sweet!
Very cool! You could put your name on the faceplate!

Thanks for the post. As of right now I really am only doing Marantz. The cost varies on the size of the plate and the amount of cut out. My laser cutter charges me by the second. Plates do look very simple to do but there's a lot involved. I could never just do a one off. Every company I work with has a minimum of amount of time and material or they just won't do it. None of these companies are small and they don't want to take on any little projects they have minimums or they just won't work with it. I have a minimum amount of material I have to buy, I have a minimum amount of laser time I have to pay for, there's a minimum amount of material to be brushed, anodize will only run a minimum amount of product, screen printer or laser etching has a minimum amount artwork and product that they will run, it's always best to buy all my boxes and packaging materials in bulk.
So for me a one off just won't work. Thanks. A good post and question though. Tony
Are you planning on making a 10b faceplate?
I'd sure like a black faceplate, Marantz made them, but they are extremely rare.
Also, some 'silver' Marantz's had some kind of 'gold' plating on the silver face. (They called it Champagne.)
I agree, you could make some cash doing this.

Yes that is absolutely a beautiful tuner. I hope to do a lot of Marantz models in the near future right now I have done these models 2230/2245/2270/2275/2325/4400 and model 19 in black and silver. I'll have Marantz Amp 1060 in black and silver and Tuner 110 in black and silver. I hope to have many models following after. I will keep that one on my list I've had more than a few request for it. Thanks Tony
Hi Tony, I always check out Dynaco stuff on E-Bay. Someone made a new black faceplate for the Dynaco SCA-35, was that you? I also ran across one for a Dyna-FM-3. You are sitting on a pot of gold. Go for it..Mark Korda!
Try the link I've included.
I emailed him a few years ago regarding a black faceplate for an FM-3, and I think it was in the $100 range. I didn't have the coin at that time (heck, still don't! Just call me Litigation Jackson for now...).

Frank Van Alstine had on for the PAS and I remember the predecessor company to Sound Values that had the remaining Dynaco part stock made replacement plates for most of the Dynaco tube units and in black. Frank's PAS did not have holes for the tone controls as it was for the Super PAS he built.

Hi Brian,
It was Jensen’s Stereo Shop. I know because I have a Super PAS with their label on it. My unit has a stock Dynaco faceplate with tone controls, but there are no wired connected to them. The thing is that I like having tone controls!

Thanks once again but no those are not mine I've only done Marantz.
I need a custom faceplate for a Jolida 1301. Take my money! I've always wondered where the custom/repro faceplate makers were. Figure out how to to the glass as well and start your money printer!
Thanks but I only make plates for Marantz as of now. My love is for the Marantz...
Thanks guys for the help and nice words...
Glad to see you made it here. I was excited when Mike shared your work! Hope it opens up whole new avenues for you!
Dave
Hi Azimecki01, those faceplates were beautiful and an artistic statement! I wish I knew how you do that. I got some projects going where I wish I could ask you for advise on the visual repair or restoration of the faceplates..outstanding work!...PS..someone will say it's not totally original, so what, it shows respect to the founder and looks better than Saul could ever imagined!....Mark Korda
Sent you an email. Thanks
You could probably sell your faceplates for a hefty sum as replacements.
