An AA friend found these and it would be so cool to have these type face plates on a vintage tube amp.
I would love to see a Scott or Fisher done in one of these colors such a 340a or a 500c..

I have to admit, I'm growing tired of blackout dials. The black faceplate on top of that looks waaay too '90's for me.
Just the thing for that DIY Marantz 7!

One man's beautiful is another man's ugly.
I like Marantz in the original color...but...if I had a unit with a damaged, bent up faceplate, I'd get one of these, probably in black although I believe he makes them in silver (champagne?) also.
They look cool. I wouldnt be worried about resale value on a SS Marantz anyway and it seems to me you could just put the original back on.?
...fronts, I would go to Walmart.

The 'broadcast' version, with rack handles. Probably the rarest version, except for the limited-production model 10.

Just noticed the rack handles and their shape is that of later shaped handles that most of the 10b era. The 10br the rack mount version of the 10b had the older design handles and from memory was the only offered rack mount option. I wonder but, it does not make sense, this is original if it was an option for the European market.

or did the Carver copy the 10b?
The 10b was made from 1964 to 1970.

He certainly did not copy the circuitry or build quality!
Dave
Send it to me so you don't have to look at it!
All kidding aside, I had no idea that this thing existed. Did they have pro versions of the preamp and amp?
Dave
They had the R option for rack mounting but these were for the usual toned faceplates. Never saw a black faceplate option for the 10/10b or rhen20/20b. Wonder if someone manufactured the one shown.

Not that I've seen or heard of.

You couldn't purchase gear from Audio Research, Mark Levinson, VTL, etc. from Wal-Mart. :)As for me, I rather like black faceplates. :)

I chose black.
After getting my SP3a1 I replaced the face with the optional black as it was still available and dumped the cheesy knobs relaxing them with those from early Marantz. Did nothing for the sound but made the unit look like it was worth the then list price. Johnson did not have much of an eye for the visual arts.

I this case I would go black too. The DP3 is at the top of my list for most desirable vintage preamps. I'd take either in a heartbeat.
Dave
I prefer silver, but almost every thing I am using now is black. Beggars can't be choosers and sound is my number one priority.
Dave
Actually, I don't have a decided preference although I do like matching. My particular collection reflects more random events than pure choice!Current garage system:
1981-purchased Threshold Stasis amp which was only available in black along with silver faced Audio Research SP6.
1997-replaced SP6 with used SP9 that originally had silver plate. sold plate (to inmate Reelsmith) and purchased black plate and knobs from ARC.Main system:
Up until recently was using black SP9
2012-purchased used Audio Research DAC7 which has black plate
2014-purchased SP20 preamp to replace SP9 and chose black to match DAC! Had the DAC been silver, I would likely have a silver stack.Like you, I'm more about the audio quality than cosmetics. :)

You reminded me, my Threshold CAS-1 is not black! You definitely have some nice gear!

all the best Onkyo components and all of the Outlaw amplifiers are black.
Go figure. :)
usually looks pretty good...

Yuck! I prefer the elegance of the original. These ARE well done, but...
I know some of the European models come in black, and possibly some other colors?
NEVER did see on in real life but I sure would like too.

It will be relatively easy to make these since my family has a factory making these type of products. However, this is a supply and demand thing. The costs involving in toolings and labour have to be justified by the actual demand. On the second thought, I would think it could be a good idea to make vintage Mcintosh face plates as those will be high in demand. Then I don't know whether this will have some properietary issues with various companies.
Edits: 10/27/14
I can safely say with Mcintosh it will not as long as you are making it for out of production vintage gear and you make it clear that you make the product and not Mcintosh.I think you would do well on Scott 299s and Fisher 500c receivers as there are tons of both..If you could redo a sherwood S-5000 in the red or the original pearl white and gold, that would be successful as well.

Don't forget Dynaco.
They made a gazillion PAS 2 & 3, and PAT 4 & 5. They were some kind of plain Jane ugly!
I don't know about the Sherwood S-5000, as not many colors go well with that cheesy gold trim.....

That cheesy gold trim is actually 24 ct plating per their literature. I have compared the color to my 23 ct wedding band and I think it is closer to maybe 20.
I was thinking about various colors but either going with the original white but a harder coating or the none painted plate of the S9500, S3300, etc. that has the same design but not painted and for me looks just fine in my system. It is not as contrasty, obviously.

Regarding the pearl white Sherwood; Agreed.
I would like a anodized aluminum pearl white face plate with black or chocolate brown writing.
My two Sherwood pieces are still in nice shape so not a big deal.
Those are some snazzy face plates Mike posted though.

Long ago I wrote that if someone made repro S3000, S5000II and S5500 plates would likely sell out pretty quickly. The S7700 would have to need substantially more expensive while the S8000 not quite as much. The wear on these makes them look terrible while a pristine one does not look dated or ugly. Then if someone would make repro knobs as so many have become discovered due to age.
Almost any of the copper or brass plates from everyone could benefit from being replaced or against least someone make a lettering overlay.

Wonder what the black faceplate would look like if the 19 was in it's wood cabinet. Hmmm.
He does good work though. Not many options if you have a unit with a damaged faceplate.
Here's my guy...
Can't imagine it would look bad. The makers model 19 with black face looks great!
