WE got back from a Mississippi River cruise that had some great musical entertainment. I bought several CD's from the musicians, and when we got home was eager to try them. Oops, they sounded edgy. Tried some old favorites of mine, and they were edgy as well. After some troubleshooting, I found the left speaker's tweeter was fuzzy. A rubbing voice coil, I think.
Now, these tweeters are New Advent tweeters, as my Advents are sort of hybrids. Fortunately, I had used SEAS 27TBFC/G tweeters in those cabinets, and still had those and their adapter plates. So it was a matter of 15 minutes to reinstall the SEAS tweeters, and the edginess was gone. The same first order crossover is used for both tweeters, so its just a simple swap, and no L-pad adjustment is needed. Yes, it's not a stock Advent crossover; using an L-pad instead of switched resistors in the New Advent.
So I got to enjoy my new CDs and compared to the New Advent tweeters, I think I like them better, as they are smoother and non-bright. A couple of the CDs were very well recorded, and the sound on my system was very close to the live sounds on the river boat.
I'm of the opinion that you have to listen to live music once in a while to recalibrate your memories. Otherwise, I tend to "glamorize" the sound of my system.

Jerry, I feel that should be the first rule of any audio hobbyist.
Yes, I suppose one can just go on old recollections of live music, but auditory memory is not necessarily held to be accurate.
And then I wonder if some audio buddies have ever heard live music, beyond at a high school assembly or sporting event anthem?
Worse yet, I wonder about some equipment manufacturers!?!

My daughter is treating me to a concert of Brahms symphonies by the Vienna Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall this winter. I expect a long and intense period of system adjustments.

I have a convenient ready reference with wifey's baby grand piano. There is no substitute for live unamplified music. Forget sound reinforced systems if you want a true reference.
That was one of the nicer features of that riverboat. The lounge area was small, and some of the performances were not amplified. The house system was pretty good; but there was still some difference.
Jerry
You can beat unamplified! We have an Irish Pub here were they play unamplified traditional Irish Music. It is wonderful!

It is useful to read that the SEAS 27TBFC/G tweeter is a very good tweeter. It does have the usual resonance peak of a metal dome, but it is way beyond what most of us can hear. Its FR is very smooth to 20Khz. It is good to know it can handle a 1st order slope. I wonder how it would do in a Dynaco A25. Probably it would work well. At $52.40 each from Madisound, it isn't too painful on the wallet.

Dave,
As it happens, I also have a pair of those SEAS tweeters in another pair of cabinets with SEAS 25F-EW woofers; which were the replacement for A-25XL woofers. Those cabinets are ported and a little bigger than A-25's. The SEAS 27TDFC soft dome tweeters would also work. In both the Advents and the other pair, I'm using a 12 uF film capacitor in series with an 8 ohm L-pad. The Advent woofer has a 0.5 ohm series resistor which I found was needed to get the bass Q right; but in the other cabinet, the SEAS woofer is straight in - very A25 like.
Jerry
Hi Jerry,
I take it you prefer the aluminum to the soft dome version?
Dave
Not really. It's just that the aluminum dome has slightly smoother response through the upper mids. I've never tried the soft dome version; but I do intend to remedy that pretty soon, as I'm quite curious about it.
Jerry
I will be very interested to read your results!
Dave
Dave,
I ordered the tweeters today and they will ship Monday, so watch for comments on the weekend or thereabouts.
I'm also seriously considering the SEAS C26 woofer. I have some adapters made for the Advent cutout, so they would be fairly easy to install. It would mean an end to replacing foam surrounds. Tweeters first!
Jerry
Standing by, Jerry! Do you mean W26 on the woofer?

It's the SEAS A26RE4. I'll have to adapt it to the cabinets, but it should be close to a drop in acoustically.
I started a new thread, Part II.
Jerry
That is the Dynaco A25 replacement. It should work well in a sealed box. keep us informed!
