I have three Ampex 1200s and one F44,all tube units but I'm playing the old Akai GX-635D tonight.I'm listening to my old capitol and London prerecorded tapes and they are old but they sound very pure, dynamic, and just overall REAL!!! I upgraded the old Ampexs but the Akai can play metal tapes.
I forgot just how incredible open reel tape is at the higher speeds.I have a collection of tapes but does anyone know of any prerecorded metal tape or at least high bias open reel tapes for sale?

New or used.
I have some machines and some tapes. It looked very interesting, but the lack of prices scares me!

If you like jazz, check out the Clare Fisher "Extentions" and the Tom Harrell. Great stuff. And not hideously expensive, although not cheap.
I've purchased a lot of 7.5 ips vintage prerecorded tapes over the last few years on eBay and most are great!
I LOVE reel tape!

When I dig up the funds to purchase, "Extentions" will be at the top of the list. Mr. Horwich was kind enough to play that tape for me at AXPONA show last year. Josh Berman Trio was stunning as well. Prices are on a par with Tape Project offerings but you get more music per tape, he targets 30 min. of material. This year's audition was Bobby Broom Trio.

What tape machine is this? It is cool!!
Mike,
As a side note, master tapes were often used during the voicing and fine tuning process for speakers. It helps to explain why some of the older speakers sound so good. I'd be interested to know what is used today as a source for that.

Either high-speed (7-1/2 ips) commercial prerecorded tapes, early generation copies of masters (or actual masters), or carefully done DIY (originals or copies -- 'needle drops' as they say today) can indeed be excellent.
Use the right tools for the job :-)
all the best,

...models in their line-up. It worked well but I changed to a Teac A-7010.

I worked for the wet-coast distributor of both Dokorder and Teac in 1969. The service manager used to swear at the former and marvel at the latter's high quality.

I wish you'd post at Tape Trail. We could sure use some new blood.

I have been rcording some of my Lute music with a Teac X2000M at 15 ips 2 trk and I agree. I wish there were more prerecorded 2 trk that weren't prohibitevely so expensive.
All I know is that I know nothing
Mike,
Ebay seller dedwax (Bruce Kinch) usually has some open reel tapes for sale.
My experience with the vinyl he sells indicates that when he says something is in good shape, its in good shape.
Thanks Louie
Much appreciated.
