However the volume is not stepped.
However, the volume pot is not.....
Is the Volume pot a taper and the tone controls fixed resistor array?
McIntosh did that with some of their Pre-Amps-
the Front of a c-8 looks like this -
switch but its not stepped.... What does the back of the C-8 look like? What tubes?
3 each: 12AX7
was powered from AMP - or a separate PS D-8 or D-8A
...the three AC outlets. I wish that it were accessible right now so I could post the photos.

there were some variants of the C-8, and IIRC one was 'self-powered'
Originally the McIntosh, Heath Kit, and others drew the Power for Pre-amps from Power Amps - and passed power & signal through an Octal Based umbilical - yes, the same octal base as a 6550/power tube....
Happy Listening

If that's the one you posted a couple days ago, that is a very nice speaker. It is a wood horn that Klipsh made which is ultra rare.

Yes, thats it now that I got the bass bin home. It has 15Wk woofer too along with K-5-j and T35. The preamp came with it and was made to match the speaker physically as they both have the name BLACK printed on them. I cant find any info on this James M. Black guy though. Looks like a copy of an old McIntosh preamp.....
...yours or you have access to it. TIA

Its mine. Its a mono preamp labled Black which is also on the front of the k horn. Made in Wheeling WV. Apparently James Black was some type of audio buff who put his name on some k horns. The speaker was unmodified except for a power resistor to the mid horn. The preamp reminds me of an early Mac mono pre. I guess the James Black guy made it though. I will post a better pic later tonite or tomorrow...
