Hello all,
This is my first post and since I am a noob I will try to be carefull.
I have a Sansui sm-30 tube receiver. Previous owner had changed the volume pot and told me he replaced it with the same pot but only 100k, which the original was 500k. I dont know if the original pot was 500k or anything. There is almost no info about this receiver.
The problem is, there is no low volume. If you lower the volume only one speaker is getting sound. I have to raise the volume to get from both speakers.
Will changing the same pot to 500k fix this issue? I will try to put current pot's photos.
Besides that i appreciate every little information about this receiver. Which speaker go well with it?
Regards

Sounds like a volume pot problem.Stupid question: Was it always like this? Typically tube stereos have a 500k or so volume pot. I think you can still order them. If not I know Goldpoint does have them. Even WITH a loudness connection if needed. Does this one also have a power switch incorporated?
You do need a 500k pot for the low impedance phono stage being it has no cathode follower. And the coupling cap is calculated for 500K - hence FR rolloff.
However it does sound like a faulty volume control.
I would also like to add that you have a nice receiver. Take care of it adn do it right.

Hi, thanks for the answer.
I forgot to tell, it does have a power switch incorporated. The pot is for both volume and power.
Was it always like this? I do not know. I bought it 2-3 months ago, and it was like this when i got it. The previous owner said the he changed the pot with a very experienced repairman. And also he said, that is the best possible solution which i dont think so.
I will also attach the schema which is on the receiver.
So which pot should i buy from goldpoint? Is it something easy to install or should I take it to a repairman?
Regards
Get a control with correct electrical characteristics in there.
I read the schematic as not showing a loudness tap on the volume control. Gold Point stuff is good, but EXPENSIVE. IMO, a PEC hot molded carbon control sourced from DigiKey will be more than adequate. PEC part # KKA5041S28 is what you need.
Switches ganged to pots. that have failed is an all too common problem. You deal with the on/off switch issue by installing a slide or rocker switch in a back panel opening currently occupied by a convenience outlet.

I know there are people who prefer the carbon pot to a conductive plastic (Alps, etc.). I don't know how it compares to a stepped pot like the beautiful and expensive Gold Point, but it is a lot easer on the wallet and also easier to fit in the tight places you usually have in vintage gear.

The Goldpoint is WELLLLLLL worth it. For a long time I didn't believe that a volume pot could make that much difference. Well I was SOOOOOO wrong!!!! It makes all the difference. After using the Goldpoint stepped attenuator, I can't believe any high end audio gear wouldn't use one.

Thanks for the info. I have wondered about them, but the cost had made me wary. What did you used it in?
Dave
I always felt Marantz PM8004 and a slightly muted and rolled off sound. I replaced the volume control with the stepped attenuator and bazinga! it brought back the highs and dynamics while still keeping that Marantz-ie sound.
I also used it as a passive attenuator. Wonderful!!!!
I would highly recommend taking the plunge.
