I found a nice pair of Yamaha speakers model NS-A738 for $15.00 @ our Local Goodwill in really nice shape! I hooked them up to my Yamaha RX500U Receiver & they sound quite good!I would say they are just a tad shy in the lower Bass area then I would like without having to use the Extended Bass button on the Receiver! For now it is a nice match & working well as a Bedroom System!Anyone else ever heard or owned a pair of these? They really are not Vintage although they are discontinued by Yamaha!

The engineering and construction values of the NS-A636 were...umm... pretty bare-bones. Pop out the woofer & I reckon you'll find a single capacitor crossover to MR and HF drivers -- pretty nominal "three way" implementation.
The NS-A636 certainly didn't sound awful... but not great, either... so here's hoping your new Yamahas are better.
As an aside, Radio Shack once sold a version (of the NS-A636) as well, called the Optimus ST-S100 (see link below for a catalog page scan from www.radioshackcatalogs.com).
... and my prophylactic apologies if I have needlessly besmirched the speakers YOU just got by assuming their guts are like the NS-A636!
I'd be interested to know what the innards look like if you're inclined to find out.
all the best,
mrh
The drivers of the RS speaker are not the same. Possibly just a knockoff.

A friend of mine who worked for Radio Shack said they were made by Yamaha for them, but did indeed use cheaper drivers!Mine use different Drivers as well compared to the NS-A636 except for the Tweeter! You can see that by looking @ the pictures of the A636's & my A738's.They do sound somewhat similar but with slightly less Bass on the A738's!Also with the A738's the Cabinets seem to be thinner & have a hollow sound when you tap on the sides! But for what I paid they mate well soundwise & look good together as well!
I found this site & I may try some of Lee's Suggestions! There must be more then 1 cap & I sure would like to know what he replaced them with! When I do take them apart I will list the cap(s) & there values,so I can get some advice as to what I could replace them with!Don't want to do any wild or expensive mods, but the caps & fiberglass insulation sounds all right!
