The illinois MPW is ok in tuner RF sections but in the audio path and they can be very harsh..The orange drops are a much better cap.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

I am not disputing your experience here:
It may be a circuit-dependent thing, but IME this part has not been bad sounding, at least in the circuits I have tried it (I would not have considered an Illinois film cap, but read good things about it elsewhere...). I've not tried any values above 0.47uf.

In the right place they are ok as far as working and they are easy to install but I don't use them anywhere in the audio path where you have higher voltages..They don't sound bad until you compare them to caps like the Mallory EM or the 716P...The Illinois caps are metallized and I have used them but even Terry Dewick quit using them..Now he uses the Nichicon Qa which are also metallized but they are a nice cap.I do like polystyrenes tho but have trouble finding values I want.
