That Fisher receiver has potential. Notice, the MPX O/P jack. At a minimum, you have the makings of a fine AM/FM tuner.
BTW, according to the service manual, the 500 uses KT66s or EL34s as "finals". A quick check with TDSL shows the EL37 to be potentially satisfactory.

Eli;Regarding the finals, I believe there were actually two (slightly) different versions of the Fisher 500 mono receiver. The earlier one (mine) used the EL37, where as the later one used 5881's.
I may have it all wrong (it's happened before), but that's what I have found out thus far.
I talked with Mikey last night and he indicated that I could use 6L6, EL37, or 5881 tubes.

I have the exact same Fisher 500 and it had a pair of Mullard EL37 tubes. I raided them for something else and put in a pair of 6L6. I need to rebuild or sell it. Missing one knob cover. I used it for years with a big University mono speaker in my bedroom in my parents' house. I remember that the local FM rock station had oldies night on Sunday from 6- midnight. That was when I would do all the homework I had avoided all weekend and listen to the oldies for a few hours on the old Fisher and the big speaker. Also listened to quite a few ballgames and I remember that the National Lampoon Radio Comedy Hour - or whatever it was called, came on late on either Saturday or Sunday night. It had a lot of what later would become the Saturday night live cast, including John Belushi, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and I think Harold Ramis from Ghostbusters fame. Some it was pretty funny stuff to a teenager anyway:) Pretty off the wall. I guess I listened to a lot of radio on that old Fisher and that is why I haven't parted with it, even though I have no real use for it now. I couldn't haul that big speaker out of the house with me, but I took the Fisher and have carried it around all these years. Enjoy yours. Just re-cap it and it will probably run another 50 years.
cheers,
Don
What do you plan on doing with the mono Fisher 500, besides restoring reliability?
Eli D.
My wife actually thinks the Fisher/ GE combo is pretty cool and has no objection having it on the main floor (not her living room though).
At this point I will refinish the wood cabinet of the GE speaker and the Fisher to perfectly match each other as well as getting the 500 running tip top. After that, I'll probably listen to Baseball games and stare at while drinking a few beers. There's something that appeals to me about ball games over the radio.
I have a late 50's Benjamin Miracord table so I will try to find a good mono cartridge for that to see how good the phono section is in the 500.
That's about it.....

Fisher phono sections usually have excellent midrange, but tend to be bass shy.
A quick search came up with some mono carts. priced under $100. You should be able to do better.

...there are at least 2 versions of this early receiver. The earliest came with EL37s. Later versions came with 5881s. There may be other variations.
