Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between B&W Matrix 801 speakers labelled 801M and 801 Series 2? From the outside they look identical. They sound the same, the crossovers seemed the same when I removed the biwire shorting link. I have asked B&W and they either don't know or won't tell!
Follow Ups:
I believe that the 801M is the first version of the 801 line to incorporate the Matrix woofer cabinet. The successor 801 Series 2 is probably almost identcal, although the crossover circuit and the APOC may differ. Both speakers were ported and came with bi-wire binding posts. The ancestor of the 801M was the 801F, and before that the 801 Series 80, neither of which were ported or used the Matrix bracing in the woofer cabinet and both were supplied with a single pair of binding posts. That is the limit of my amateur historical knowledge and I may be wrong about a couple of the above details. I have the Matrix 801 Series 3 with Northcreek external crossovers and love the sound they produce.
Thanks for your reply. As far as I can tell you are entirely correct but from what I can see the crossover is the same too. I had a look at them when I removed the bi-wire links inside (to allow bi-wiring) and couldn't see any differences at all. In fact the only differences I can see are on the labels! One says 801M and the other 801 Series 2. B&W are completely useless at answering this question, they don't seem to know the answer. It could well be that the answer is "there is no difference" but you might hope they would know this since they made the speakers!
