This was bugging me for about a year now. My source is a Marantz NA7004 network player. I listen to six different channels, all classical, all VERY!!!!! different volumes. And some days the volume changes on the stations itself. a Big problem for a lazy man!
After fooling around with various attenuators I finally came up with a proper source attenuator. One that does NOT rolloff the top and bottom end. And one that does not cause loss of dynamics.
Finally (many many steps not mentioned) looked towards stepped attenuators. I finally settled on a 50K resistor in line with the signal and a IR 47K Alps volume control I bought from Bent audio. The Bent audio remote is the variable shunt resistor to ground. Works beautifully!
And yes I plan on building a prettier box for the control and not the nest of wires on the test block. Although the rats nest does have a certain appeal????????

Maybe a forward-thinking company like Schiit will devise a unit that connects universally, works perfect, and MSRP's for less than a hundy.
If anyone can, it's them.

Thought this may interest you.
It's not a Sherwood, but its vintage.

I still haven't gotten my Sherwood S-5000 back from Mike Samra, but when I do I may do something similar as I am not inclined to get up and change the volume the old fashioned way.

You betcha change it the old fashioned way..He will keep the heart and blood pumping Stace.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
I've been using a 47K ohm resistor in line with the signal and the Bent audio 47k remote control pot as a shunt to ground.
I REALLY REALLY don't hear any loss of signal or dynamics. And I'm a picky bastard! Actually I'm really enjoying this with my new solid state setup as a passive control. Blows away everything else I've used prior.
You've got the equipment to try it out. See if there is any signal change with a basic setting of a 47K ohm resistor and about a 10k shunt resistor. Or just a 47k pot as a variable resistor. It could be the answer we lazy bones were looking for.
I've also come to realize just how crappy a lot of volume pots actually sound. Wow - some of them can really ruin a good stereo. Try out a stepped attenuator.

I hear ya Mikey, It certainly won't hurt me to get off my ass.Lloyd Walker (Walker Audio) is a big proponent of the "get up up off your ass" and change the volume versus a remote control.
I can't wait to hear the phono section on the Sherwood.
Post some pics of that little hot rod S-5000 and send me a bill.

That's is going to be the creme de la creme in this one..I have the last tin foil caps coming from Solen which go on the input grids...These are white ones with gold lettering.

Cr`eme De La Cr`eme works for me Mikey - Can't wait!
