I have diy SEAS Froy 3 speakers, but may consider vintage bookshelf speakers.
Follow Ups:
Some speakers from the tube era prefer tube amps. I recently picked up a pair of EMI DLS 529 "Dangerous Loudspeakers" that I had lusted for as a juvenile audiophile. They sounded really good on some material but not as good as I had remembered. Somebody told me that these speakers were really designed to be used with a tube amp and won't sound their best with solid state. His explanation involved electrical concepts that go beyond my understanding so I won't try to repeat them. But this is a consideration with vintage speakers. You probably want a tube amp from the same era. Modern tube amps tend to sound a lot brighter and -- dare I say it? -- more like solid state than vintage tubes.
It's never too late to turn back the clock.
THe Froy 3 is relatively easy to drive. It's 5 ohms or greater. But it's about 86 DB efficient so it will like power. I wouldn't go under 50 watts and 100 watts is probably better. And more than that will keep the transient peaks cleaner. It's a very dynamic speaker.
As you know the speakers you use will dictate by a large margin the type of amplifier you should use.
More power doesn't have to mean headbanger levels... more power provides the necessary "juice" for low sensitivity speakers, allowing them to sound at their best; on the other hand, at equal engineering quality, less powerful amplifiers are often more musical than power monsters, so if your speakers have a sensitivity above average then you can be very happy with less power...
Depending on your budget and requirements, there's fine vintage integrated amplifiers from Accuphase, Pioneer, Luxman, Sansui, Technics... there's tons of information on this forum and others... If you see an amplifier you like for sale, google the model and you'll find all information and reviews you want. it's a good place to start...
Researching the hundreds of amps I see for sale on line is an overwhelming task for me. I guess it is a crap shoot.
Can't go far wrong with Marantz, Accuphase, Pioneer (silver face), Luxman, Sansui. get something that has between 50 and 100watt/ channel, in good condition; if you have the choice, given a certain budget, between a restored (re-capped) "lesser" model and a more upmarket non-restored model, go for the restored one. well that would be my advice... hope this helps. And remember: it ought to be FUN ;)
Dont forget Yamaha. They made some great sounding stuff too.
I'll keep my eye pealed for a restored amp.
I forgot, I also have a pair of JBL L1 monitor speakers. I'll have to replace one woofer that got fried from bad caps in a vintage amp. They are some very fine and easy to drive speakers.
