and the Fisher 100s or 80AZ which are the same amps, are some of the best sounding power amps ever made. The 55a is a triode connected amp running in class A for about the first 23 watts in class A and then peaks into AB2 around 62 watts running KT90s..It's runs almost 500v on the plate.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

Who wins? Sound, reliability, serviceability?
I prefer the Sherwoods for sound and think they both are tied for reliability though there I again would suggest it seems that there are available more working Sherwoods than Fishers that have not been worked on. Fisher used parts after the war that were not as long lived as the US produced parts used by Sherwood. If they have each been gone through and recapped, it is likely a dead tie.For ease of service, the Sherwood amps tight under the chassis and the angled parts mounting compounds ease of digging in. So, would vote for the Fisher. Also, the Sherwoods have a slug of big caps to deal with, seemed the engineers may have owned stock in the capacity company. For tuners my vote goes to Sherwood; they kept the tuners straight forward, we'll laid out and rugged. Depending on what Fisher tuner, you can have a door stop if the front end is problematic. These were from Germany and amongst the best of any but unserviceable as the parts even back then were not available, they replaced the tuner.
Fisher was an early adoptor of pcbs and wave soldering and sadly cold solder joints plagues their units.
Sherwood only made 1 power amp and no stand alone preamp so, it may be moot. They did make a stereo preamp with mono amp designed to be initially be used mono and the you bought the power amp of theirs to convert it to stereo. These were made for a short time only and why finding their power amp is difficult finding a pair from one person almost unheard of.
