I've noticed the same in general, But Kimber seems to improve performance when I can fit them on some vintage gear, but the difference is not as big as w/ modern electronics. What I like about vintage is, as you say 'not picky', just an enjoyable listening experience.

Vintage gear is VERY!!!! forgiving when it comes to cables and interconnets.
And yes, with modern gear you can spend more time finding the right cables then matching components.
However I've found that plain old 14ga speaker wire and RCA jacks seem to work pretty darn well with new gear. Go figure that out? But it does for me. Been down a few expensive cable paths and back.

My own experience with vintage gear is that it's not more "forgiving" than the rest, and benefits from good cables as much as new gear. All my gear dates from the seventies (with the notable exception of the digital sources of course) and I use VanDenhul "The Integration" interconnects and cheaper QED "Qudos" speaker cable. The difference they made is very sensible even to non-audiophile ears. I can understand one doesn't want to spend money on cables if the "vintage system" is nothing but a fun project for the garage or a second system, but if it's your main system, it would be stupid not to hear your electroncs at their best... just my two cents, again.
