Philips AH 7861 BK 01 Receiver from EBAY!Besides a little cleaning on the outside it is supose to work very well! From what I was able to find on the Internet along with all you fine folks here @ the Vintage Asylum,I think I am going to really enjoy this Receiver a lot!According to this brochure it is 45 watts per channel, which is plenty for me! I plan to try it out with my JBL Lancer 44's,as well as my Fisher XP 5's or my Fisher XP 60 K's!, but Would like some thoughts as to what other speakers may work well with this! Here's a picture of the actual Receiver I won! What I also find is so interesting about this Receiver was that it was made in the USA,back in the mid 70!

Brian,
Good luck with the unit. Seems well thought of.good looking too. Looks kinda like a early sansui piece, no?
Best,
Dave
BTW, the series was made from '77 until '81 and appear to be with the exception of McIntosh the last US produced receivers. They were designed by a dedicated engineering team at Magnavox after the success of the 1500 series of receivers. When you open the 1500 and yourself up it is easy to see they are closely related. After the final design signoff, before production started Philips bought the company and simply rebadged them. More impressively these engineers also got through management the series tuner, power and preamp. The sonic signature of the receivers and the separates was very close. IMHO, Philips would have been smarter to have retained that team and used them to design the Marantz line after they bought the company as what they had was far better than what the receivers they made under the Marantz moniker.
Are you planning to use the JBLs or Fishers on the receiver and why you listed them. They have quite different voicing and I think it will be more which voicing you like than the receiver that will affect your preference. The receiver is quite neutral in its presentation. Not like the Yamaha I have that are more sterile in their presentation and seem quite lifeless by comparison.

I listed both of those(XP 5's & Lancer 44's) because I feel they are my best speakers that I own that mate well with what else I have,& the type of music I listen to.Although I have others such as my vintage Pioneer CS -811A's,which may work very well with the Philips?I also own some vintage
Marantz Imperial 5's the first versions with the cloth surrounds! So nothing really high end here in speakers like most have! But none the less are not Crap either! As I have said before I mostly Listen to Lawrence Welk,Tony Bennett,The Rat Pack etc.so I am trying to build a system that sounds good with that kind of music @ moderate volume levels! Thanks again for your help!
Nice little collection of speakers. I remember the Marantz 6 as they were seemingly an attempt to reach those buying the high end Marantz separates bit, less Bout the other models. In the Boston Market their speakers could not seem to get any traction as the market was pretty controlled by the NEW speaker companies and Dynaco. Try them all, it is half the fun of it. I would definitely try the Fisher and Marantz but I could not get used to the early Japanese sound, so have a bias.

That's what I was planing to do!But I need to downsize & weed out the not so good speakers as I have way to many & use that to invest in one really good pair of speakers!
If you were close, I would loan a few sets to you to try. Better to have one or two really good sets than a dozen okay ones. I am still in process of getting rid of some 3-4 pair and then will be down to my keepers. And, a lot more room.

I hear you. I am still about 2 - 3 pair too heavy. 1 set is committed to someone out of the country until year end and another I will dump as soon as possible while the other is on loan to the ent who is out until the end of year and then when and if returned will also be dumped.
Trying to get down to the ADS L300 and either the KLH Fives or Wharfedale W70s. Better one or two good sets than a dozen not as decent. They take up too much space.

I haven't won a single item on E-bay. I paid for every one of them.
Regards to all,
John
OK? In the Midwest(WI.) & elsewhere I am sure when you bid on an item @ an Auction online or otherwise & you have the Final wining bid, they say you have just won that Item Lot # ******,etc.!
I was looking for friendly advice about the Receiver I just got(WON)& so far with the exception of one member,I have gotten nothing but complaints or sarcasm!I am sure Ebay has sent to your EMAIL Address something that says or has said you have WON the following. It is like when you go to the casino & play the 25 cent slots. You put in 3 Quarters & it says you won 2?
OMG Brian lighten up. He was just joking. If I remember correctly you have cranked out some zingers yourself on the Asylum.....right?
I guess I have! It just did not seem like he was making a joke.

I did not have room in the subject line for everything I wanted so I posted it the way I did! Also I did not want the prices to climb any higher then they already have on EBAY by having Googles search engine flag this post when someone searches US made Philips Receivers!

About the only type of speaker I wouldn't run it on is a full range estat.
My 796 version does well with everything I have died on it. It's very flat, accentuating no part of the spectrum and can tame speakers with those bass humps, nicely. It is voiced not dissimilar to my old ARC tube amp and not like most receivers. The detail is very good with little coloration.
I had mine on the original Large Advents and KLH Fives today. Earlier before I sold my Symphonyss when I paired them the bass was almost under whelming coated to my McIntosh but not too far off when I had the Philips Lab Series amp and preamp on them.
Oh, on the Heresy IIs with the limited bass the combo does seem too bass thin. Still really good for classical and jazz, solo instrument and the like but for rock and similar, not going to get anyone excited.
Get a decent antenna on it and the tuner is like we'll worth what you probably paid for it. Prepare for some sore fingers herring the speaker wires on, those little buttons are small and it takes quite a bit of pressure to get the wires on. I use either 1/2 of an open spare or bare wire. Running can help but, I do not like that practice. Once in, they are in as well and maybe better as to the connection than a banana or screw terminal.
I seem to remember the black version top cover is paired wood veneer. Even if you strip it, it still will look cheap. I always wanted to get a nice case made for mine. Also, the stark white lighting needs for at some point. Thinking maybe a light blue for my silver faced unit.
In running mine it seems quite stable into 4 ohms.

As always thanks for your advice & help! I have right now my Allegro 3000,paired with my Allegro 1000 on my Magnavox stereo 300 & Lawrence Welk,The Rat Pack,Tony Bennett, etc.all sound good! This unit was based on the 1500 Receiver, but much lower in power! They have Horn Tweeters which I hope will work well with the Philips! I would love to find a pair locally
of Klipsch Heresy series 1 or 2!
My memory is foggy on this one, but if it was made in the US, then I suspect it was from when Philips owned Magnavox, and I suspect it was built in a Magnavox plant in (I think) Tennessee. I don't know whether it was a Magnavox design with a Philips logo, or a Philips design built in a Magnavox factory. I had one briefly that someone had put in the ewaste bin where I work. I liked it, but didn't really need it, so I put it back for some other lucky soul to take home.
Thanks for the story it was interesting & fun to read!
You are right as root place of manufacturer. That was where the Magnavox plant was located. It was totally a Magnavox design and was ordered into production but before it started, the company was taken over and the series rebadged to Philips.
Seems like a lifetime ago when I happened upon the first of the series and other than TIC with the review of the 673 tuner there was with the exception of a static Web Page referencing the separates of the series nothing about them. I tried to trace some history as the sound and guts were impressive. No one associated with Philips US even knew they were ever made. I did finally run down a rather elderly person who worked in TN at the plant and while not on that project knew of it and had some remaining memories. The impending sale caught all by surprise as it looked like the company had a winner and could turn it around. The engineering team was let go not long after and hence no further development of the series. Philips tried to capitalize on the series that had been relatively well received in the US by expanding the tuner offering and adding integrated amps with all but the largest integrated being manufactured offshore. Not certain but, suspect the engineering was also offshore. Radioactive, over on AK has or had a couple of the other turners and integrated amps. By '81 with a 4 year run under its belt, Philips killed the line in the US but kept the series in Europe for a few years with totally different units. There also appeared to be that Philips offered the tuners offshore tuners and integrated amps in Europe with out the series designation.
Philips had a potential winner in the US where other than its turntable could not get much traction. It should have exchanged the looks of its totl reel to reel and cassette decks and kicked the 212 up a notch so they looked like the series and labeled them as such. It could have done more with the mfb speakers and regular speakers by associating them, also. The company was just going in too many marketing and product directions confusing dealers thereby limiting customer access.
