Brian,
The specs look decent and I seem to remember the model being in the Philips brochure I have for the Lab Series. Not near to check will later. If it is I would say likely pretty decent. Philips did not market speakers, turntable or tape units under the series but models in the catalog during the period are all quite good so this might be a winner. It is funny you mentioned it as I am finally considering a cassette deck.and thinking of a Philips to tie in with the 797 that looks like it might be the basis of my new system.

Thanks for your thoughts on this,as I am thinking about trying to find one down the road to add to my collection! I lost out on the HK 670 Receiver & the 430's or 730's are out of my price range right now,so I decided to keep an eye on the Philips Lab series as they are going for much less then the HKs & should be just as good of a choice as well!I am thinking it might be a good match for my JBL 44 Lancers!I already have a Philips electronic 777 turntable(E bay photos) that I need to clean the switches on & order a new Stylus for but otherwise 1 of my favorite turntables I own!Again thank you & everyone else for your help over the years! As I have been a proud member here since the late 90's!
.. I have a 7871* - the black-faced version - and a 430, and as much as I like the 430, the Philips is better, and not just because of the power. It is more refined in sound and build quality, and does indeed have more power. I highly recommend them. I wish I could find some way to get the preamp and power amp from that series, but the last couple of years have seen the prices skyrocket for those two. Make sure that what you get is explicitly labelled "High Fidelity Laboratories" or you may get only a close relative, not the US-made units which are so good.
*actually, I have two - one is stock, except for replacing the PS caps and some other out-of-spec parts; the other is a full-blown upgrade mod with upsized caps in the PS and boutique caps throughout, new close-tolerance & matched resistors in the preamp, and replacement of the op-amps in the tuner and phono sections with nice new equivalents (OPA2604, iirc). I think the latter is superb, but not a completely different piece from the stock unit, which I think speaks well for the model.
Not sure if interested but there is a 787 receiver on eBay with not too much money sitting on it at the moment. Also, a few others of the series.
The 787 is almost the same as my 797 but meters are in different places, has a different faceplate and has individual phono preamp level controls on the rear that the 797 does not have.

Checked my catalog and it is not the same model as the catalog has the N2535. Comparing the features and what little specs there are, it seems the one you are enquiring about is uper scale in quality and probably later.
Considering the average going price for most cassette decks, might be worth a grab just to see.
